    Mudroom Progress: Installing the Flooring

If you’re looking for a durable, but beautiful floor that’s also an easy DIY install, this Select Surfaces Flooring might be your answer! This waterproof, vinyl plank flooring is not only easy to install, but can also go over most existing floors!

We’re doing things a little backwards here. Normally, I would like flooring to be one of the last things going in – like after all the painting is done and there isn’t a chance I’ll spill paint on it – we all know how those “best laid plans” go though, don’t we?

So no, the painting isn’t even close to being done and I’m still waiting on quite a few things to arrive, but flooring is going down.

    Select Surfaces Flooring Being Installed

Grunt had yesterday off and as we all know – it’s best to take advantage of free grunt labor anytime you can. ๐Ÿ˜‰

He isn’t completely done, but he’s put a dent in it and that’s mostly thanks to this Select Surfaces Flooring being a relatively easy DIY install. The best part is that this engineered vinyl plank flooring can go over many existing flooring surfaces. We were able to put it right over the old linoleum sheet flooring and the bare concrete that were both in this space.

On top of that, this flooring is waterproof, so it’s perfect for this room in the house where we have had a water leak before. Fingers crossed that doesn’t happen again, but just in case, our flooring will be ready.

I also love that this flooring has that natural look of hardwood, but with the low-maintenance that comes with vinyl plank flooring. As all busy mamas will agree, low-maintenance is our preferred way to go. ๐Ÿ˜‰

How to Install Select Surfaces Vinyl Plank Flooring

    Materials and Tools Needed:

    Step 1

If you are removing any existing flooring currently in place, do so first. This vinyl plank flooring can go over most existing hard surface floor coverings as long as it is smooth or can be made smooth. As I said earlier, we went right over both concrete and old sheet flooring.

    Step 2

Adjust door trim if needed. If you want to be able to easily slide the flooring right under door jambs and trim, place a plank of the flooring up against the door jamb and mark where the top of the plank hits. Use an oscillating multi tool to remove this part of the trim as shown below.

Cutting out door jambs to install Sam's Club Flooring

    Step 3

Starting in the top left corner of the room, lay the first plank so that the head and side seam grooves are exposed.

Installing click together vinyl plank flooring from Select Surfaces

You always want those white parts you see to be on the outer edges so you can click more planks on.

Remember, this is a floating floor – no glueing or nailing needed. Just lay that first piece down.

    Step 4

Click another plank into place beside the first plank you laid.

How to Install Vinyl Plank Flooring over Sheet Linoleum

Place it at an angle over the exposed tongues and push down firmly.

Tapping in vinyl plank flooring from Sam's Club.

Use a rubber mallet and lightly tap all the seams tight.

Tapping together vinyl plank flooring from Select Surfaces.

    Step 5

Repeat until the floor is fully covered with your new vinyl planks. When you need to cut planks to fit, simply measure, mark with a pencil and then cut with a power saw. We used our miter saw for cuts.

    Step 6

Once the flooring is fully installed, you can install baseboard and quarter round around the edges of the flooring.

I’m super excited to have this incredibly beautiful and equally durable flooring in this space! This is one of the most high traffic areas in our house so it needs flooring to withstand it all!

  • Mudroom Makeover Progress Week 2

    Mudroom Makeover Progress Week 2

While my 2020 vision board was completed this past week (see it here!), the realization of my vision for the mudroom is slow going. Womp womp womp.

I spent much of last week finalizing the plans for it including hardware finishes, light fixtures and more. There are always those little details that end up taking more time than I ever anticipate.

Things have started arriving for the challenge though!

This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

Bird Wallpaper / Bamboo Fabric / Pink Trellis Fabric / Blue Trellis Fabric / Green and Blue Pattern Fabric / Green Tassel / Pink Tassel / Velvet Finishes Cosmopolitan

After finding the wallpaper for this space, I pulled colors from it to work into the rest of the room. I adore this wallpaper. The attention to detail on this wallpaper pattern is just stunning. It has a slightly vintage feel to me as well, but still with classic design roots, so I don’t think it will be “out of style” anytime soon. Then again, when have we ever worried about something being out of style around here? You’re talking to the girl who just a month ago ordered the big set of shoulder pads she could find to get the full-on Dynasty effect. ๐Ÿ˜‰

In terms of actual progress…the room has been cleaned out and the cabinet doors have been taken off.

And there’s my mess for the whole world to see.

Remember how the cabinet doors had the funky little holes on them, well those are gone and we now have open centers.

I did not cut out the centers myself. I could have, but this was one of those jobs where I really wanted to leave it to a professional woodworker. I wanted the lines clean, straight and even and it would have taken me forever to get all 20 doors cut out. I handed them off to Jeremy, who’d done cabinetry work for me before at the Beloved Foreclosure. He had them all done within a week and did a great job for a very reasonable price. Local Chattanooga friends, if you need cabinetry work done of any kind, I highly recommend checking him out – his Facebook business page is right here!

After the cabinet frames and doors get a good coat of white paint, the green bamboo fabric will be stapled to the back of each door to cover the opening. This was the most affordable solution I could come up with for getting rid of the weird holes on the doors, but still hiding my treasures in the cabinets.

I have also worked on the credenza-bench makeover a little as well.

This piece has been sitting in our garage for a couple of years now. It’s just such a great storage piece that I wasn’t quite ready to part with it. I’m glad I didn’t now! Everything that is black on it (sans the top) will get the Velvet Finishes Cosmopolitan treatment.

It’s hard to tell from this picture with the bright light coming in, but this is a light mint green hue. This is by far one of the easiest projects in the space – Velvet Finishes doesn’t require you to prime the surface before painting! I just wiped the piece down with a wet cloth to remove the dust and cobwebs from it being in the garage and then started painting. Bonus – you oftentimes won’t need a topcoat either with this paint! I’ve used this brand on countless furniture makeovers HERE!

I’m hoping the stained drawers will work with the design. On my mood board for the space, they do, but real life can often be different. If the stain on the front doesn’t work, I’ll paint them in the Cosmopolitan hue as well. Either way, this pink trellis fabric will be made into an upholstered cushion for the top.

  • The One Room in My House You’ve NEVER Seen Before…

The One Room in My House You’ve NEVER Seen Before…

Looking for mudroom design ideas rooted in classic design, but still functional? And maybe there’s a pop of color here and there? You’re in the right place!

    Happy New Year, freaks!

I hope each of you has had a wonderful holiday season! Our crew certainly did – in fact, I think it was one of my favorites to date. I felt like we all really slowed down and took time to enjoy every second we could of the season. We were also able to work in a couple of little trips – one including a tour of Goodwills around the state with my best girl. I completely lucked out on the whole kid thing. When she’s cool going thrift store shopping for an entire day, there isn’t much else you can ask for! haha!

To kick off the new year, the incredibly talented Stephanie of Casa Watkins Living has asked me to join in on the New Year New Room Refresh Challenge….

Myself and all those other talented folks you see above will be refresh one room in our homes throughout the month of January. You’ll be able to check in on our progress at each of our blog’s each Tuesday during the month. We’ll also be sharing lots on Instagram stories, so be sure to follow there!

What room am I making over? THE ONE ROOM IN MY HOUSE YOU’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE….

This funky little space right here, folks:

    Mudroom Design Plans
    DIY Mudroom Makeover
    Mudroom Plans

So what kind of room is that? It’s a little space you walk into from our garage and through to get to our den. It also buts up to the guest bedroom. At one point, before the previous owners added an addition to the house, this space would have been part of the garage.

I’ve never really known what to do with this little L-shaped room. Yes, those built-in cabinets have been wonderful for storage, but did you notice the ugly little holes drilled into them for ventilation?

    Mudroom Cabinets

    Those could be prettier, right?

I’m sure the blue all over the walls, trim and cabinetry didn’t sneak by you either. And there’s also that big eyesore of a heating unit in this space.

Over the past year, it has quickly became apparent to me how best to utilize this space: we need a true mudroom.

We have our laundry room-mudroom that I got into shape a couple summers ago and it’s perfect for the summer when we’re going to the backyard all the time, but we need a space now for throughout the year where we can come in and drop backpacks, riding gear, dance bags, hang coats, etc. And that’s just what this space is going to become…

    DIY Mudroom Makeover

    Mudroom Design - Colorful Classic

Overall, the mudroom design has a colorful classic feel. There are only two small windows in this space so I’m bringing in lots of white with a few pops of color.

    DIY Mudroom Plans

    Mudroom Plans

    1. Have centers of cabinet doors cut out to remove ugly holes. Paint all the cabinetry white. Cover the now open door centers with this gorgeous Osaka Bamboo Trellis fabric. Replace cabinet hardware – currently thinking these beauties. I’m really excited to kick this storage area up a notch.
    2. A couple of tassels go a long way when it comes to adding color and personality to a space. I’ll be tossing a couple of SmithHonig’s silk tassels around in the space.
    3. The wall opposite the cabinetry and wrapping around the corner will be get a board and batten wall treatment and on top of that, this gorgeous Hawthorn wallpaper from Milton + King. I love the classic decor feel this paper has, but also the character added by the colorful birds. Also topping off the board and batten wall, will be a handful of these wall hooks, which will be great for not only hats and coats, but also a great tote.
    4. In terms of flooring, we’ll be pulling up the old sheet vinyl flooring and installing Select Surfaces Engineered Vinyl Plank Flooring in Chocolate Oak. This flooring is waterproof, which was a must for this space since it’s partially below ground and it’s also an easy DIY install. To lighten up the flooring a bit and add some texture, I’ll top it off with a classic navy and beige rug from Mohawk Home. There will also be a pretty blue and white umbrella holder hanging around somewhere, which was my first purchase for this space months ago and the jumping off point for the design.
    5. To hide that ugly heating unit, I’m counting on this green room divider to do the trick.
    6. Finally, I’ll be bringing in a DIY mudroom bench by way of an old credenza. You may remember this credenza makeover from a few years back. I used it in my office for a while and always loved it. Even after I redid my office and there was no longer a need for it in there, I held onto it just in case. Well, “just in case” is here! Parts of this credenza will get a lightening up makeover with a coat of Velvet Finishes Cosmopolitan. I’ll be adding an upholstered top that sports this beautiful trellis pattern in coral. The top will also have a couple more decorative touches by way of two pillows – one in this pattern and another in this one. The bench will also add additional storage space to the mudroom since it has nice deep drawers on the base.

A huge thank you to all our sponsors for this challenge!

This girl has a lot of stuff to get done this month! Be sure to see what everyone else is up to with their room refresh:

  • It’s a Colorful Life Christmas Home Tours: Camels, meet Swans

It’s a Colorful Life Christmas Home Tours: Camels, meet Swans

Hi there! Welcome to the It’s a Colorful Life Christmas Home Tours! Did you just jump over from Heather at Southern State of Mind? I just loved all her nutcracker themed touches! If you haven’t toured her holiday home yet, be sure to after mine and also catch the rest of the tours as well – the entire lineup is at the end of the post!

I was at the thrift store yesterday and one of the employees noted how I’d scored some good art finds. I told him that tended to be how it went with me. Despite making a thrift store stop in hopes of finding a console table for the upcoming mudroom makeover, I found art. And lots of it. My shopping trips always end up becoming themed and not the theme I set out for it to be.

The same is often true of my holiday decorating. Did you see the den at the farm in all it’s holiday-cowboy-country-music glory? And last year, at the Landing Pad, it was camels. And this year, the camels were introduced to the swans.

That’s right. Only here will you find camels and swans co-mingling among one another while being supervised by busts of David in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

And it’s all surrounded by colorful pops of holiday cheer.

Emerald Chairs / Golden Pillows / Multi-Colored Pillows / Gold Coffee Table (similar) / Red Curtains / Lion Art

This camel decided he liked it so much here last year that he stayed the whole year through.

If you did see my colorful home tour last year, this area might look pretty similar to last year’s holiday decor. I used the same garland, flower arrangement and throwing-gifts-all-over-the-place trick as I did last year. I freshened up the garland with new ribbon and ornaments though.

I don’t know what it was with swans this year, but it’s like I was a magnet to them. Every yard sale and thrift store I haunted, these things just kept screaming “Buy my majestic self!” So I did. While you won’t see all the swan decor I’ve accumulated this year in my home tour, here is a paper mรขchรฉ one I scored at Goodwill for $2. She’s keeping the coffee table pretty.

As you’ll see in a moment, completely unnatural looking glitter poinsettias seem to be making a strong move toward becoming holiday focal points around here as well…

This little nook has quickly become a favorite of mine.

This leopard may get its own “everyday” collar after the holidays. I’ve loved dressing it up for Halloween and now Christmas.

Peacock Tassel / Art Print / How I Made the Art “Hang” From a Bow

No lamp or art was left un-Christmasafied.

I finally got my act together and worked the massive cabinet more into the holiday decor by running magnolia garland along the top and donning the busts with bows. Bows are also a theme here, huh?

When they aren’t wearing bows, a few special ones get vintage scarfs. Everyone learns the meaning of accessorizing well around here.

    On to the dining room…

Room Dividers / Rug / Curtains

Room Dividers / Art / Rug / Chairs (similar)

I told you poinsettias were trying to take center stage. I made these simple chair embellishments from floral picks.

I switched out the silver tinsel tree I had in here last year for a slimmer rose gold tree. And in a shocking twist, I actually used color coordinating ornaments and ribbons to decorate it.

Wall Art / How I Embellished the Art with Ribbon and Ornament Clusters / Rose Gold Christmas Tree

Yes, those are swans on the tree. I saw them and once more, they just called my name and sparked this whole tree’s feel.

While his looks are deceiving, David actually does approve of the swan tree.

He fought me on the bow though. ๐Ÿ˜†

I tend to keep the table simple during the holidays. To dress it up just a bit, I arranged some faux greenery, a few ornaments and a swan candleholder (a $4 yard sale find) on the marble slab I keep on the table.

Merry Christmas, friends! I hope you all have a wonderfully colorful holiday filled with family, friends, lots of love and maybe even a camel and/or swan! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ways to Decorate Everyday Decor Pieces for the Holidays

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #DamageFreeHolidayDecor #CommandDoNoHarm #CollectiveBias

The holidays are stressful enough, so how about we make holiday decorating a little less stressful, huh?

    Youโ€™re with me? Yay!

I truly love decorating for the holidays. I love all the shiny ribbons, chic bows and colorful touches everywhere. I also love not spending a ton of time and thought on those things. And funny enough, I often end up liking my super simple holiday decorations more than the ones I spent countless hours trying to perfect.

So today, Iโ€™m going to share five different simple holiday decorating looks focused around working your everyday decor into your holiday decor.

And of course, itโ€™s all shiny. Because duh. It is Christmas.

    SIMPLE HOLIDAY DECORATING IDEAS

    Supplies Needed

To create some of my favorite holiday looks, I usedโ€ฆ

Commandโ„ข products are what makes this holiday decorating so easy. No tools required and they still give you a strong hold. With their new adjustable line, you donโ€™t have to get it perfectly in place the first time โ€“ these can be repositioned up to  three times in the first 20 minutes, giving you the extra chances you need. And let me just tell you about all the extra chances Iโ€™ve needed in my life…Youโ€™ll find Commandยฎ Adjustablesโ„ข at your local Walmart.

I also found all the other items I used โ€“ bows, ribbon, etc. at Walmart as well.

EASY HOLIDAY LOOK #1: โ€œHANGโ€ IT FROM A PRETTY BOW.

Do you guys remember in the 90โ€™s when everyone wrapped their wall art in wrapping paper each holiday season? I mean, I love me some great wrapping paper, but I also love my art. I donโ€™t want to cover it up during the season, Iโ€™d rather make it shine! So, adding a bow that the art โ€œhangsโ€ from is my interpretation of the 90โ€™s wrapping paper on wall art.

To do this, youโ€™ll just need a pre-made bow (or one you made if youโ€™ve got mad skills like that), coordinating ribbon and a Commandยฎ Adjustablesโ„ข Repositionable 1 lb Hook.

Add a couple of strips of ribbon to the back of the bow that will be long enough to go behind the art.

These bows came with a decorating tie attached to the back. I just secured the extra ribbon onto that. Next, make a loop with the remaining tie left.

Place a hook above your artwork.

No worries if you donโ€™t get it placed exactly where you need it the first time โ€“ you can readjust it!

Place your bow on the hook, then work the ribbon behind the frame to make it look like the frame is hanging from the bow. Adjust the hook as needed.

Boom. Chic holiday decor that only looks hard!

EASY HOLIDAY LOOK #2: ADORN WITH ORNAMENT CLUSTERS.

You guys know ornament clusters are my jam during the holidays and I love to hang them from just about anything I can. Another way I like to embellish art at Christmas is with these gorgeous colorful clusters. (Tutorial for the clusters is here.)

After whipping up a couple of clusters, simply place Commandยฎ Adjustablesโ„ข Repositionable 1 lb Hooks above a picture frame or any other wall decor youโ€™d like to embellish.

Tie the ornament clusters on, then adjust as needed.

Commandยฎ Brand Adjustablesโ„ข Hooks can be repositioned up to three times and still hold strong. Each hook or clip will hold up to 1 lb.

I love my chicken lady, but I love her more when surrounded by shiny colorful ornaments.

EASY HOLIDAY LOOK #3: ZHUSH UP THE MIRROR TOO.

For this one, I wanted to give the bow and ribbon around the mirror a โ€œmoldedโ€ look and I wanted to keep the ribbon out of the way of actually being able to look in the mirror. Using wire edged ribbon helped with molding the ribbon like I wanted, but Commandยฎ Adjustablesโ„ข Repositionable 1 lb Clips were also key here.

Just like with the first bow I showed you, I attached extra ribbon to the back, then made a loop with the remaining wire for hanging. I attached a Commandยฎ Adjustablesโ„ข Repositionable 1 lb Hook to the top center of the mirror to hang the bow from. Then, I attached Commandยฎ Adjustablesโ„ข Repositionable 1 lb Clips (better for taming ribbon and garlands), to either side of the mirror and clipped the ribbon down.

See, even the camel is ooohing and ahhhing over that one.

EASY HOLIDAY LOOK #4: RIBBON + ORNAMENT CLUSTERS = ALL THE HEART EYES.

And for the grand finale, we combine three of my favorite things โ€“ beautiful ribbon, ornament clusters and gorgeous oversized art.

I have a couple pieces of oversized art that needs a little more than just clusters. For those, I use a combo of ribbons and clusters hung on Commandยฎ Adjustablesโ„ข Repositionable 1 lb Clips.

Simply place a few clips on the wall above the art or whatever you are embellishing, then attach long flowy lengths of ribbon to the clips. Layer on enough ribbon to provide some depth. Then, top off the clips with ornaments clusters.

Yea. Itโ€™s kind of my favorite too.

The best thing about all these holiday decorating looks? When you take it all down after Christmas, you wonโ€™t have damaged your walls!

What simple holiday looks will you be whipping up this year?

Want to come back to these ideas later? Just pin the image below!

  • A Simple Christmas at the Farm

A Simple Christmas at the Farm

Hi there! If you’re new here, hopping over from Laura at The Turquoise Home, welcome! I’m thrilled you’re here! Wasn’t Laura’s house a treat? She has a beautiful home, but she’s also such a sweet soul. I hope you enjoy my holiday tour today as well!

    Simplicity.

Such an elusive word sometimes, right? When my uncle (the farmer) is debating over buying new equipment or fixing something, I always ask him if it’s going to make life more simple. Usually, the answer is yes and I follow that up with, “Why are we waiting then?”

I’ve come to realize I need to take my own advice more often.

This year, I was itching to dress the knotty pine clad den at the farm up for the holidays. It’s my favorite room in the whole entire world.

And while I had no particular ideas in general for this space, the room itself knew exactly where to go…and it also knew I needed to keep things simple.

So I let it lead me.

I think things just tend to work out better that way.

    Flocked Christmas Tree

And if my Pap were still sitting in this room watching Gunsmoke, while he’d shake his head and laugh at his Stetson used as the tree topper, he’d still appreciate the holiday nod to the cowboys.

    Flocked Christmas Tree

And while doing a themed tree never would have crossed my Grannie’s mind, her guitar was the inspiration so I think she’d approve.

While I decorated, I listened to good country music and danced a jig or two around the room just like Grannie and I used to do together.

    Guitar Ornaments

The tree didn’t get even get lights. All it needed were a few simple ornaments to make it special.

There was no rhyme or reason, but I even pulled out her old typewriter for the season. The spirit just moved me. And I listened because that’s what you do when the spirit talks.

And of course, it worked out perfectly as an anchor for the vintage Christmas cards.

    Because this room just knew…

…like it’s always known exactly what I needed and when to wrap me up with its sweet memories.

25+ Really Great Gifts for the Impossible Man on Your List

We all have at least one on our list – that guy who seems to have everything. Don’t fear though – I’ve went straight to the source (men) and compiled a list of gifts for the impossible man. That’s right – here are over 25 gifts for hard to buy for men.

If you’ve been with me for a while, you may know that holiday gift giving is one of my favorite things in the world. I really love to pick out thoughtful, meaningful gifts for every person on my list and I relish in watching their faces when they open their gifts. Even us snarky gals have a soft side very now and then.

Let me tell ya though – picking out gifts for men can be hard. They can sometimes be just really hard to buy for, right?

So for this gift guide for men who you never really have any idea of what to get them, I went straight to the source – Grunt Labor.ย

I made him tell me the best gifts he’d received that he always uses over and over again, what items he’s putting on his list this year and what things he finds just really useful in life.

Gifts for Men Who Are Hard To Buy For

This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

    Gifts for Men Under $30

So they’ll never lose the remote again…

At just $10, maybe every guy needs to get one of these for Christmas this year. This is perfect for those guys who love leaning back in their chair with a drink close by. And maybe, you won’t get yelled at to help him look for the remote anymore either…. Find it here.

    For those dapper dudes…

A pocket square is much more interesting when it’s fun, no? For those guys on your list who would agree, they will most definitely appreciate this vintage-esque Hawaii style pocket square.

    When they know best…

When theyโ€™re the best one for figuring out what they need, get them a Happy Guy gift card. You can get these in amounts as little as $20 and they can be used at multiple different retailers!

    A Really Cool Bottle Opener

This is one of my favorite gifts for guys Iโ€™ve found this year. These are actual bullets that were discharged by the military and then made into bottle openers. You can get them engraved as well. I opted to just have my gift recipientโ€™s initials put on the one I got, but you can do their name, commemorate a special event, or whatever else you can dream up. Find the bullet bottle openers here and use code LIFESTYLE to get 10% off the bottle openers or anything else in this Etsy shop.

    Cigar Related Gifts

Both my man of questionable honor and Grunt Labor love a good cigar every now and then. If my education of cigars serves me correctly, a key to keeping cigars fresh is a humidor. Here’s a nice humidor for doing just that.

Your cigar loving man already has a humidor? Well then what about a personalized cutter or cigar travel case?

    Sports Related Grilling Items

For the man in your life that has an undying love for his sports team, I’m sure he would appreciate any of these sports team grilling accessories. They’ll literally be able to serve up their team spirit using the meat brander and/or hot dog brander. Then let them show their team spirit and throw in another manly grunt as well when they fully clad their grill with their beloved sports team on the team logo grill cover.

    Personalized Collar Stays

Both Grunt and my father-in-law have a set of these and both love them. My father-in-law has a set that says “I love you Pa” on one and my daughter’s name and birthdate on the other. Grunt Labor has one like that as well, but with Daddy. He also has one that says “Kick Ass.” You can seriously have loads of fun customizing these collar stays.

    A Great Watch Case

If your guy is like mine and has to have a watch for various occasions (sporty, dressy, fun, etc.) then get him this watch case – it holds 12 watches and they can gaze at their lovelies through the glass top.

An Out of This World Phone Stand

This is another one of those little gems from The Apollo Box. I think this little guy is so cute, but useful too. While heโ€™s getting ready, shaving or just sitting at the table, he can easily watch ESPN, the news or a crazy cat video without ever actually holding his phone. Find the astronaut phone stand here.

    Make him bulletproof.

Itโ€™s literally bulletproof glass. This was another find by Grunt Labor on Apollo Box and weโ€™ve ordered two for people on our gift list. You can get them in a shot glass size and rocks glass size.

    Give them a home base.

For their bachelor pad, man cave or workshop, get them a home base โ€“ doormat style. This one is especially great for those baseball fans on your list!

    Make ’em snazzy.

For the more dapper fellow in your life, get them a bow tie in fun colors! This one comes in over 15 different colors.

    Gifts for Men Under $50

    For the Sneaker Collector

I think we all know at least one guy who is a bit of a sneaker fanatic. He’s ready to hit order as soon as the latest, trendy style is released. He has boxes of mint condition Jordans. While other’s sneakers look worn within the first month, his are always pristine. For him, there’s this book.

    Anything Yeti

If your guy has yet to jump on the Yeti train, then here is the perfect gift for him. These are the real deal at keeping things cold. Both Grunt and I swear by them. The coozie is of course perfect for keeping cans cold. The lowball is great for cocktails on the deck. If you’re looking for a bigger ticket item, the Yeti Tundra Cooler will literally hold ice for days without melting.

    So they like beer?

If they are really into craft beer and trying new kinds, then they might love you extra for signing them up for a monthly craft beer club. This craft beer club will send twelve beers a month in four different styles. Itโ€™s a gift that keeps on giving throughout the year.

    A great knife.

I grew up with men who always carried a pocket knife on them. They used it to cut pears straight from the tree, clean their fingernails and often as a tool. The value of a good pocket knife should never be underestimated. This zebra wood pocket knife can also be personalized.

    Personalized Cooler Bag

If they are heading out to go fishing, golfing or any other outdoor adventure, Iโ€™m sure they would appreciate a good cooler bag to take along with them. You can get this one in three different colors.

A wallet and a phone case

If they seem to often lose their phone and/or wallet, then this is the perfect gift for them. It puts the two into one and you can personalize it on top of that! Find this little gem right here!

    Happy feet = happy guy.

Any of these slipper options are under $50 and are sure to make the fellaโ€™s feet on your list happy and comfortable for years to come. The warmest and softest are going to be the pile lined hardsole or softsole. If they tend to be tougher on shoes or like to walk the dog in their slippers, go for the hardsole for longer durability.  The Double Bottle Fleece Slippers are going to be a bit lighter and flexible. More slipper options can also be found here.

    For the baseball enthusiast…

For those guys on your list who love baseball and feel it their lifeโ€™s mission to visit every MLB stadium, get them this baseball stadium map.

    Gifts for Men Under $75

    For the Golfer

Get the golfer on your list organized and maybe even give him some room to grow with this two bag golf organizer. It also has pull-out baskets for storing tees, balls and gloves.

    A Good Set of Sawhorses

There are few things worse than rickety sawhorses. Grunt Labor and I have had our share of them. Finally getting good solid sawhorses that wouldn’t buckle when something was put on them was one of the best investments we made. This set of two sawhorses includes a cool clamping feature.

    A Great Turntable

As weโ€™ve previously discussed, vinyl is back. Iโ€™ve already bought myself this Crosley turntable โ€“ and it hasnโ€™t stopped playing since I got it โ€“ except when Iโ€™m sleeping. This is perfect for those guys on your list who love vinyl.

    A Manly Toiletry Bag

Every man needs a good travel bag โ€“ preferably a pretty leather one with their monogram on it. This is a great gift for guys who travel a lot!

    Personalized Wallet with Hidden Message

This wallet is one of my favorite finds this holiday season. First off, itโ€™s leather. Iโ€™ve never met a man who didnโ€™t appreciate something leather. Secondly, you can have their initials put on the outside of it, but then also a special message on the inside. Think outside the box for the special message – I had song lyrics put on the wallet I got. Find this wallet here!

    Gifts for Men Under $100

A Good Pair of Wireless Earphones

Grunt Labor is a runner and wanted new earphones for a really long time. He got these Beats headphones earlier this year and uses them non-stop. He says they of course have great sound, but are really comfortable as well, which many in-ear headphones aren’t.

    A Great Weekender Bag

Every guy needs a good weekender bag. One that’s durable, but not too “pretty” looking. Grunt Labor has one and as I’ve said before, he uses it all the time. These bags are the perfect size for weekend trips.

    Gifts for Men Under $125

    Real Leather Padfolio

Grunt Labor requested a nice portfolio for Christmas as well. He’s tired of taking blah notebooks to meetings. This personalized leather portfolio is a little more pricey, but it will last forever. There are lots of options on Etsy though for leather portfolios.

Help him start the day off right…

I’m on a mission to bring back valets. These are just so handy and perfect for organizing your next day’s attire. Everything you need, all in one place. Find this valet here. This one even has a lidded storage compartment and pull-out drawer for added storage – what a great place to store watches too!

The trendiest gift for men this season….

    A professional shave at home…

If you really want to win them over this holiday season, then a great gift option is the new Gillette Labs Heated Razor. It’s warming bar distributes heat throughout the shave to give that feel of a professional hot towel shave at home. Both he and his face will thank you.

This list of gift ideas is geared toward all the foodies on your holiday gift list – including the cooks, the bakers, the hosts and yes, those who just love damn good food.

    Custom Pet Artwork

While most people have plenty of photos of their pets, most don’t have a gorgeous piece of art depicting their pet. To have the portrait done, all you usually need is a photo you can send to the Etsy seller. I’m willing to bet you can pull one of those from your gift recipient’s Facebook page. If you can’t though, I have complete faith in your stealthy undercover snap-a-photo moves. Find out more about getting custom pet artwork here.

Custom Family Art / Custom House Art

Get a family portrait done in a different way – have it made into a one of a kind art piece. This is a fun twist on the traditional family portrait and a great way to make sure everyone is smiling! haha! Details on family art here.

I will never not include a custom home portrait in my gift guides at least once every holiday season. These babies are just too good not to mention. We’ve now given multiple people custom home portraits and they are always a hit and often bring a tear to an eye. All you’ll need is a photo of the house you want the portrait for. While giving them a portrait of the house they are in is always a great idea, you can also think outside the box – like their childhood home, the first house they started their family in, their grandparent’s home, etc. This will be something they will treasure for a very long time. Details on the house art here.

  • Gifts for Little Kids that Aren’t Toys

Gifts for Little Kids that Aren’t Toys

Most kids can easily create a list a mile long containing all the toys they want for Christmas. I know my kid can and already has! But, we don’t always want to get them just toys. This list of gifts for kids that aren’t toys has a few things they might not have wanted, but will end up enjoying – a whole lot.

If any of you have kids or grandkids like my little Circus, they’ve already made up their list for Santa and their parents and it’s full of toy after toy after toy. And hey, that’s alright! It is Christmas and I can’t imagine not seeing the Circus’ face light up as she gets a few toys she’s been longing for.

However, I also like to surprise the Circus with a Christmas gift or two that she didn’t ask for and that aren’t toys, but that she will enjoy just as much.

If you’re on that same page, this list of gifts for kids might have a thing or two the littles in your life would love – they just don’t know it yet!

This list is more focused on gifts for little kids, roughly ages 4-8ish. My kiddo fits in that age bracket, so it’s easier for me to come up with things that kids in that age group would enjoy. Some of these gifts could absolutely work for kids younger or older than four and eight, and of course, you’ll be the best judge for that!

Some brands provided products and/or compensation for inclusion in this gift guide. However, all thoughts and opinions are 100% my own. This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

  • Gifts for Readers that Aren’t All Books

Gifts for Readers that Aren’t All Books

If you have an avid book reader on your holiday gift list, take a look at at this list of best gifts for readers! There are some great books you could get them, but there are also great gifts for book lovers that aren’t books!

Since we talk books around here a good bit (although I am behind on sharing my latest good reads with you!), I thought it would be fun to create a gift list full of gifts for bookworms this holiday season.

I’ve complied some of my favorite reads (and ones I have on my to-read list) in different genres, but since it can sometimes be hard to sometimes pinpoint exactly what a fellow reader might like to read, I’ve also gathered some non-book gifts for book readers. I have to say, some of these are just super creative!

Some brands provided products and/or compensation for inclusion in this gift guide. However, all thoughts and opinions are 100% my own. This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

For the Person Who Doesn’t Know What Rain on a Tin Roof Sounds Like

    Great Gift Ideas for Readers

My Southern Journey / Once There Was a Farm

If you’ve got someone on your list who needs to fall in the love with the South, get him or her a Rick Bragg book. He’s written my favorite books about the south. A good place to start is with My Southern Journey – short personal narratives he’s written throughout his writing career. If you think they’re ready to jump right on in though, get them his All Over But the Shoutin’ book. I am also a big fan of Once There Was a Farm. This book goes farther back than Bragg’s and recounts the stories of growing up on a farm in the 1920’s and 30’s with just Dabney’s mother running the farm. It’s not a very well known book, but I discovered it about 12 or 13 years ago and have read it countless times since.

If they need a bit more easing into the South…

    Gift Ideas for Book Readers

    South of Broad

If memoirs and non-fiction isn’t their thing, but you still think they need a good education about the South, then get them a Pat Conroy book. Any Pat Conroy book will do, however I am partial to South of Broad as it was the first I read of his and I fell hard. And even if you don’t think they would like books about the South or they know all about it, but they’ve never picked up a Pat Conroy book, then change that now. Bless their souls, what is wrong with them?

For Those Who Need a Laugh

Gifts for People Who Love to Read

It Looked Different on the Model / Stories I’d Tell in Bars

I haven’t read either of these before, but reading the synopsis, both are getting added to my to-read list. Sometimes we just need a good laugh and to know that we aren’t alone in the world when we’re in a dressing room staring at our reflection in the mirror wondering what in the hell went wrong. Both of these books will aid in that.

For the One Who Isn’t Scared of a Few Ghosts

Gifts for People Who Love Reading

Four and Twenty Blackbirds / The House on Tradd Street / The Family Plot

These are a few of my all-time favorite ghost stories. The first two, Four and Twenty Blackbirds and The House on Tradd Street are actually the first in a series of books. I’ve read Four and Twenty Blackbirds a few times now as well as its follow-up books. It mixes history with voodoo and of course, a good family secret or two. The House on Tradd Street is set in Charleston, South Carolina and again mixes some history in there, complete with an old house (which I’m a sucker for) that holds a few secrets. The Family Plot is written by the same author of Four and Twenty Blackbirds and is one of her newer books. Again, it’s set in an old house that’s been abandoned for years and is now being stripped of its “good stuff” before it’s demolished. However, the house is haunted – and not with the good kinds of ghosts.

    Are they history buffs?

Gift Ideas for People Who Like to Read

Before We Were Yours / Spinning the Moon

Both of these books have a good bit of historical fiction weaved into them. Before We Were Yours goes back and forth between present day and the 1930s and creates a historical fiction story from the Georgia Tann scandal in the 1930s when children were being kidnapped from their parents and then sold via her “adoption agency” to families all over the country – an amazing read, y’all. Definitely one of my favorites to date. Spinning the Moon is actually two books in one by one of my favorite authors, Karen White. One novel is set during the Civil War and the other during Reconstruction. Both books are excellent reads and its even better because it is two stories in one book!

    For the Girl Power Person…

Best Gifts for People Who Love to Read

Bad Girls Throughout History / Becoming / Notorious RBG

These are for the people who are all about empowering females. Bad Girls Throughout History chronicles the lives of 100 revolutionary women from all walks of life including Joan Jett to Marie Curie. Becoming is Michelle Obama’s much anticipated memoir. And finally, Notorious RBG is about the one and only Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whom I consider to be one of the most inspirational women ever. In a nutshell, this book tells the story of how one small woman has dedicated her life to further gender equality in our country. And she’s still doing it at 85. That’s truly just the tip of the iceberg though – RBG is a force to be reckoned with and there’s no doubt in my mind, females wouldn’t be where we are today without her.

For the Parents Still Trying to Figure It Out

Great Gifts for People Who Like to Read

But Did You Die? / I’m Sorry. Love, Your Husband / I Heart My Little A-Holes

These books are for those parents who need to know that it’s completely ok to not have your shit together. Because really, none of us do and if some of us say we do, we are straight up full of you know what. But Did You Die? is from the same authors of I Just Want to Pee Alone, which was another hilarious foray into the world of bad parenting at it’s best. I’m Sorry. Love, your husband. is parenting from a dad’s view. It will make men feel not alone and make women realize that it’s not just their husbands that are stupid sometimes. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’m kidding. I Heart My Little A-Holes is just as the book cover says – a bunch of holy-crap moments no one tells you about parenting. We love them, but y’all know they are straight up little a-holes sometimes.

    Gifts That Keep Giving

Looking for the gift that keeps on giving for someone on your holiday gift list? Look no further! This list of useful gifts that keep giving and monthly gift boxes are sure to be the perfect gift for a few folks on your list!

If you’re one for thinking out of the box when it comes to holiday gift giving, then this list is for you.

These are all gift ideas that keep on giving throughout the year.

Magazine subscriptions are usually the most thought of “gifts that keep giving” holiday gifts – and those are great options! What about a different gift that keeps on giving though?

I’ve got two different types of gifts that keep on giving here:

    1. Practical, useful gifts that the gift recipeient will find themselves using over and over again.
    2. Subscription Gift Boxes (some really unique ones!) that they’ll be surprised to get throughout the year!

Some brands provided products and/or compensation for inclusion in this gift guide. However, all thoughts and opinions are 100% my own. This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

A Gift that Keeps on Giving

Useful Gifts They’ll Soon Find They Can’t Live Without

    Gifts that Keep Giving

    Anti-Stress Microwaveable Neck Wrap

For the overworked friend on your list, give them this neck wrap. This wrap pulls double duty – you can microwave it for a warm wrap or stick it in the freezer to use as a cold wrap. It also boasts a soothing lavender and chamomile scent.

    Gift that Keeps on Giving

    Peter Thomas Roth Mask-Erade Set

If you really want to spoil them, give them this mask set to go along with that neck wrap. I’m a skincare junkie and these are some of my most favorite tried and true face masks right here at a great value – only $19 for the set!

The gift that keeps on giving

    The Giving Plate

Being a person who loves gifting, I adore the idea behind this plate. It doesn’t actually belong to any one person. The idea is to gift it to someone, full of sweet goodies of course, then they’ll fill it back up and pass it along to someone else. Beautiful, right? It’s a great way to get kids in a “giving” state of mind as well!

A gift that keeps on giving

    Cast Iron Dutch Oven

Speaking of cooking up yummy dishes, one of my favorite kinds of gifts that keep giving is great cookware! You can never go wrong with a good dutch oven – I use mine all. the. time. These things are so versatile. Make it even more special by giving them a tried and true recipe to go along with the cookware!

    Gift Ideas that Keep Giving

    Polaroid Box Set

This one is perfect for the younger folks on your holiday gift list! They will love going “old school” taking Polaroids! This set comes with everything they need to get started. You might just have to give them a training session. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Holiday Gifts that Keep Giving

Give them the gift of a beautiful front door all year long with this seasonal wreath subscription. With the start of each new season, they’ll be greeted by a gorgeous new wreath to go along with it.

    Gifts that Teach Something

    gifts that keep giving

    Yeti Rambler

If they have yet to buy themselves a YETI, do it for them now. We even have lowball YETIs for our cocktails. These suckers keep cold drinks cold for hours and vice versa for hot drinks. They even have YETI coffee mugs now if that would better fit your gift recipient.

    Magnifier Pendant Necklace

Not your regular necklace! Beauty and functionality merge perfectly together in this magnifying pendant necklace! Perfect for ladies who have trouble reading small print and could benefit from a handy little magnifying glass posing as a pretty necklace around their neck. The reviews on this necklace are fantastic as well.

    gifts that keep on giving

    Defrosting Mat

I am the queen of forgetting to defrost meat. And never once have I ever successfully been able to use my microwave to defrost either. To those of you who have actually figured out how to properly use those settings, my hat is off to you. For the rest of us, thereโ€™s this defrosting mat.

    gift ideas that keep giving

gift ideas that keep on giving

    Stainless Steel Bar Soap

I donโ€™t mind cooking, but I detest the smell that garlic and onions leave behind on my hands. To get rid of those, I run the back of a stainless steel knife along my fingers under the water. Let me just tell you though that this stainless steel soap bar is much safer. This is such a useful item that anyone who cooks often would be appreciative of.

ideas for gifts that keep on giving

    Amazon Firestick

If they have yet to jump on the Firestick train, then go ahead and pull them on board this holiday season. Iโ€™ll be the first to say that when Grunt bought us one, I was like, why do we need that? And then I discovered that with this one little thing, I could watch all the television series Iโ€™d never gotten to watch before (hello Ally McBeal!) and then re-watch all my favorites (The Sopranos!). And I can also feed my 1970s, 80s and 90s movie addictions.

    gift ideas that keep giving

    Legacy Box

I am a huge fan of Legacybox. If you’ve been around here for more than a hot second, you know that I am big on preserving those special family memories whether it’s a piece of furniture, a photo or hell, even a bottle of cologne. Legacybox is a service that digitizes all your old family photos, home videos and more. Talk about giving someone a walk down memory lane for the holidays, right?

Give them the gift of not having to figure out what’s for dinner with a gift card to Blue Apron. Unique Personalized Gift Ideas

I love picking out unique personalized gifts for people on my gift list. Here, you’ll find both personalized gifts for him and monogrammed gifts for her, as well as budget personalized gifts under $25!

Being from and living in the South, I can appreciate a good monogrammed or personalized gift. You know us Southern girls – we’ll throw a monogram on just about anything we can!

I love giving personalized gifts for Christmas because they are are both unique and meaningful. Don’t get me wrong, I also love giving useful gifts and gifts that will spoil the gift recipient a bit too.

If it wasn’t already obvious, I’m a lover of all kinds of gift giving.

I’ve compiled a list here of unique personalized gifts for him, her, kids, couples and also personalized gifts that are under $25. And don’t worry, not every gift on here has to be personalized with a monogram – I’ve got some variety for ya! Either way, these gift options will show the gift recipient that you really went the extra mile for them.

Some brands provided products and/or compensation for inclusion in this gift guide. However, all thoughts and opinions are 100% my own. This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

    Cheap Personalized Gifts Under $25

    Unique Personalized Gifts

    Personalized Hand Stamped Key Necklace

I love the not-so-fancy feel of this personalized necklace from What on Earth. The key adds a special touch without it being too “froo-froo,” shall we say? This item would be a special gift for a guy or gal! It doesn’t have to be personalized with just initials either! You can also customize it with a word.

    Monogrammed Gifts for Her

Custom Colorful Name Keychain with Tassel

This one is for those gals in your life who love a touch of color and a fun tassel. I can’t think of many gals on my own gift list who wouldn’t like one of these! Customize it with their name, monogram or a word of your choice.

P.S. – What on Earth (where the key necklace is from) is a new-to-me store I discovered this year and I absolutely love them! They are a great source for unique gifts!

    Cheap Personalized Gifts

    State Jumbo Mug

Personalized gifts don’t always have to sport a name! Make a gift personal by giving them something that nods to their home state or one of their favorite states to visit! These mugs do a fantastic job of depicting characteristics of each of the 50 states and at only $6 a piece, they are a steal!

    Personalized Horoscope Gifts

    Horoscope Secret Message Necklace

    Monogrammed Gifts for Her

One of these leather monogrammed bracelets will set you back about $23. I love how the leather paired with the fancy monogram creates a kind of leather and lace feel. Does that make any sense at all?

    Unique Personalized Gifts for Couples

    Personalized Night Sky Star Map

    Couples Personalized Gifts

    Personalized Home Ornament

You guys know I’m all about giving a nod to special homes whenever I can. This is of course perfect for folks who’ve just purchased a new home, but putting a picture of their first home on it would also make a great gift!

    Super Sentimental Personalized Gifts

    These might require tissues…

    Sentimental Personalized Gifts

    Letter Blanket

Don’t give this gift without a box of tissues. Write a letter to someone special on your holiday list and then have it put on a blanket where they can literally wrap themselves up with your words.

    Handwritten Personalized Gifts

    Handwritten Recipe Platter

You’ve seen the cutting boards with the handwritten recipes on them, here’s the platter version. Honestly, I think this one might get more use than the cutting board. Let’s be honest, most of us wouldn’t feel too good about cutting into Grandma’s recipe.

Unique Personalized Gifts - Custom Handwriting Bracelet

    Engraved Handwriting Bracelet

This engraved handwriting bracelet might cause the gift recipient to need a tissue or two after they open it. With this bracelet, you can send in real, actual handwriting and have it put onto a bracelet. This is perfect for someone who has lost someone close to them recently or for mamas and daddies to have their handwriting put on a bracelet for a teenager whose about to leave the nest.

Will you be getting anyone on your list a personalized gift this holiday season?

I hope this list helps you find the perfect item just for them!

  • Tackling a Bathroom Remodel on a Budget: Nine Ideas

Tackling a Bathroom Remodel on a Budget: Nine Ideas

Tile, vanity, hardware, plumbing fixtures. It all adds up and it all adds up fast! These nine bathroom remodel ideas on a budget will help you save some serious dough! The best part? No compromising on style!

Bathrooms and kitchens. The two rooms that will make or break your house when it comes selling time and that also tend to cost the most when it comes to renovations.

If you’ve got the budget for an out-of-this-world bathroom renovation, then go for it! There isn’t a doubt in my mind, you’ll enjoy that bathroom for years and years to come.

If, however, your bathroom remodel budget is closer to non-existent than anything else, no worries! I’ve got nine different ideas for you here that can help you save some serious dough on your bathroom remodel, without compromising style.

Local Chattanooga folks – I’ll be teaching a workshop about remodeling your bathroom on a budget in November – more details here!

    Bathroom Remodel on a Budget

Have your bathtub/shower painted instead of replacing it.

Bathroom Remodel Ideas on a Budget

When we redid the guest bathroom, we were on both a tight budget and a tight timeframe, however the shower needed some cosmetic help for sure. The door needed to go and that beige color was awful. We didn’t want to rip out the entire unit because it wasn’t in bad condition and this was the guest bathroom – we don’t have guests every weekend. And of course, because $$$. After some research, I discovered you could have your bathtub unit professionally painted. I called around and got some estimates and it only ended up being around $500 to have our unit painted. The finish is very similar to what they use in the factory. Our guy even removed the doors, filled those holes and you can’t even tell where the shower door was! He even custom matched the white to the white on the toilet so that the two whites didn’t stand out against one another! Huge savings on not ripping out the old unit and we didn’t have to deal with the mess from ripping it out!

Ask for remnants or “scratch n’ dent” countertops.

    Bathroom Remodel on a Budget

The vanity in the guest bathroom needed a paint job, but other than that and the hideous countertop, it was still a pretty solid vanity. The countertop was awful though. We visited a local countertop store and asked to see remnant pieces of countertop options left over from bigger jobs so we wouldn’t be paying as much. We found one that worked, but as it turned out there was a scratch on the countertop. But, it didn’t affect the stability of the counter and it was in the corner. Since I had planned to put a tray on the countertop anyway in that spot, it didn’t bother me a bit. We were able to get an extra $100 knocked off the cost of the counter because of the scratch. On top of all that, the scratch isn’t really even noticeable when the tray isn’t there, you really have to hunt for it. Top the new countertop off with a shiny new sink faucet and it will only look like you spent a million bucks. ๐Ÿ™‚

Instead of tile on the walls, go with a custom painted wall treatment.

Ideas for a Bathroom Remodel on a Budget

When I started planning the guest bathroom makeover, I found an image of a bathroom online that had this beautiful tile on the wall in horizontal narrow rows. Again though, this was the guest bathroom – not the master or any other bathroom that gets a lot of traffic, so I wasn’t going to spend hundreds of dollars on tile for the wall. I mimicked the tile look with paint though and I love how it turned out! And can you believe all I used to create the washed-out blue stripes was a roll of Frogtape and just a sample pot of paint?! See how I did this wall HERE!

If you prefer to make a bigger statement in the room, go with a bolder pattern and color…

Bathroom Remodel Ideas on a Low Budget

This is an accent wall I did in one of the bathrooms at our previous house. I wanted a bold pop of color in here and a pattern that mimicked cane like you would see on the back of a chair. All it took was a little time to tape off the pattern and then a couple coats of paint. See how I did this cane inspired wall HERE!

Put snap together flooring over your old tile flooring.

    Low Budget Bathroom Remodel Ideas

Apparently, the guest bathroom is like the poster child for quick fixes on a budget. This space had to be turned around fast and ripping up the tile and putting down new wasn’t an option. Instead, we installed this snap together laminate flooring directly over the old tile. I love how it looks like wood flooring, but it’s not! There are loads of gorgeous vinyl flooring options out there these days! You can see how this space looked before HERE!

    Stalk discount stores for mirrors.

Bathroom Remodeling Ideas on a Budget

I’m not a big fan of the matchy-matchy mirrors that come with vanities from big box stores these days. I’m also not a fan of the plain Jane frameless mirrors that many bathrooms sport. I’d rather have something with a little more character that adds to the space instead of just being there to take up space. So, I always check out places like Home Goods, TJ Maxx, Marshall’s and Ross for mirrors that would be great above vanities. The mirror you see above was only $30 at Home Goods!

Damaged walls? Cover with luan or beadboard.

Bathroom Remodel on a Budget - Nine Ideas

When we started working on the farmhouse, it was obvious something was going to have to be done about about the walls in the bathroom. The whole bathroom actually had to be nearly gutted. The tile on the walls were actually plastic tiles and lots of them were falling off. Again, no budget for retiling walls here! We pulled all the tile off, but the walls were still damaged underneath where the tile had been glued. For a fast and budget friendly fix, we covered the walls where the tile had been with luan panels and topped it with a chair rail. If you would prefer more detail, you could do this with beadboard panels instead.

Go for timeless finishes that tend to cost less.

Nine Ideas for Remodeling a Bathroom on a Budget

Trendier finishes on faucets and hardware are usually going to cost more. If you want to save some money and keep your bathroom from dating too easily, go for finishes that will stand the test of time – like chrome. Chrome will always be in style and it tends to be cheaper.

That being said, if you absolutely love whatever the latest finish trend may be, then go for it. I have Champagne Bronze in my master bathroom and I still adore the finish just as much as I did when we first put it in there.

Paint the existing vanity and replace the hardware.

Ways to Remodel a Bathroom on a Budget

I’m sure you’ve heard this one a few times – paint your vanity instead of replacing it. As long as your vanity is in pretty good shape, go for it! If it’s falling apart though or has water damage for some reason, I’d seriously look at replacing it. The vanity in our guest bathroom was solid and had good classic lines, so I just gave it a couple coats of oil-based paint and new hardware – it made a world of difference!

Add in wall-to-wall shelving for extra storage and decor space.

How to Remodel a Bathroom on a Budget

If you’re tight on storage space in your bathroom, build you some shelves! The photo you see above is about the 3rd time I’ve built shelves like these – they are so easy! Find out how to HERE!

  • Things for Kids to do in New Orleans | Day Three

Things for Kids to do in New Orleans | Day Three

Planning a New Orleans family vacation? Contrary to popular belief, NOLA is loaded with lots of kid friendly activities! This itinerary will outline plenty of things for your kids to do in New Orleans!

This is Day 3 of our kid friendly three day New Orleans itinerary. See Day 1 Activities here and Day 2 Activities here.

Our last day in New Orleans. *sigh*

With any trip, including this one, I like to leave the last day low key and open for the most part so we can cross anything off our list we weren’t able to do yet or to just relax and take in the city.

So that’s what we did! We had one scheduled tour for the day, but it was in the evening, so we had the whole day to do whatever we wanted. It was the perfect ending for this trip!

If you haven’t read about our previous two days in NOLA…

For reference, we took our seven year old on this trip. She’s proven herself a fantastic little traveler over and over before. New Orleans is a walking city, so if your kid won’t do well with lots of walking, I don’t suggest making this one of your first family trips. If you are taking kids that are younger or older or taking multiple kids, then modify accordingly.

Adults, don’t worry – there are plenty of things here that will also keep your attention!

    New Orleans 3 Day Itinerary

See Day 1 in New Orleans HERE!

See Day 2 in New Orleans HERE!

Day 3 – Free Time & Ghost Tour in the Evening

    Sleep in!

This was the first and only day of our trip we didn’t have a morning tour already scheduled. We opted to sleep in and get up and ready at our leisure.

    Breakfast at Cafe du Monde

Things for Kids to do in New Orleans - Cafe du Monde

Enjoy those glorious beignets and cafe au lait one more time before you have to leave. I also wouldn’t turn my nose up at you if you went back later in the day for more. ๐Ÿ˜‰

New Orleans 3 Day Itinerary - Street Jazz Band

There’s usually a live band playing just outside the cafe so sit back, take it all in and enjoy! Don’t forget to tip them before you leave though – these guys are a huge part of the New Orleans experience.

    After breakfast…

As I said, I planned our trip so we had most of this day free to do whatever we wished. I’m going to share how we used our time below. Be sure to read our Day 2 itinerary for more kid friendly things you can take advantage of in New Orleans.

    Stroll around Jackson Square

New Orleans Family Vacation - St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square

Damn, it’s gorgeous. As I said in our previous day’s itineraries, morning is the best time to take pictures and really breathe in the city. It’s less crowded and cooler too.

    The Presbytere

Three Days in New Orleans - Mardi Gras Museum at The Presbytere

The Presbytere is a museum to the right of St. Louis Cathedral. It has two exhibits – one about Mardi Gras and one about Katrina. The image above is a display you see as soon as you walk in which perfectly grasps the heart of both exhibits.

Visit New Orleans - Katrina Exhibit at The Presbytere

While the Circus throughly enjoyed the Mardi Gras exhibit, she was also intrigued by the Katrina exhibit. It’s a wonderful exhibit that will pull at your heart and accurately depicts the resilience of New Orleans and its people.

The Presbytere in New Orleans - Mardi Gras costume made from blue tarps.

If you look closely at the costume above, you can tell portions are made of blue tarps which were a staple in New Orleans after Katrina.

Kid Friendly Things to Do in New Orleans - Mardi Gras Museum

There are countless costumes in the Mardi Gras exhibit that will leave you in awe.

New Orleans Mardi Gras Museum at The Presbytere

The Circus loved seeing it all and it only more solidified her stance on her need to come back for Mardi Gras.

    Stroll around the French Quarter

    New Orleans Family Vacation

We spent a good bit of this day also just strolling around the French Quarter.

    Family Friendly New Orleans Trip

I adore the architecture that one can only find in the Quarter.

    Courtyard in the French Quarter

The courtyards of New Orleans are one of my absolute favorite parts of homes in the area. I’ve decided a courtyard is a future must for me.

    Shopping

After lunch, we did a bit more strolling through the quarter and some shopping at the same time. Here are some of our favorite shops to visit in the quarter….

    Faulkner House Books

New Orleans Shopping - Faulkner House Books

If you’re a book lover, and especially if you’re a Faulkner fan, you must visit Falulkner House Books. Yes, Faulkner did live here at one time. This is a charming little book shop that of course has lots of books centered around New Orleans.

    The Mask Company

After discovering Mardi Gras, the kid was intent on finding a mask to take home. I am not a fan of all the cheesy souvenior shops throughout the Quarter, so every time she wanted to go in one for a mask, I would say no, we’ll find a better one and drag her on down the road. We lucked upon the Mask Company just down from Faulkner House books on Pirate’s Alley. It’s a small little shop filled with only masks and the sweet man who runs it. Both she and I bought a mask here.

    Southern Candymakers

If you want pralines or anything sweet, hands down, Southern Candymakers is the place to go! Don’t you dare stop at any other candy shop! I promise you won’t regret it! And while you’re there, just go ahead and have them pack up a box of pralines and send to me!

    Nola Couture

I mentioned this fantastic little store as well in our day two activities. I wanted to mention it again here because they also have a location in the French Quarter. I adore this store.

    Forever New Orleans

This is a fantastic little shop for alll things New Orleans, but not cheesy souvenir type things. I got a pretty little fluer de lis butter spreader here, and a NOLA hat I adore. Forever New Orleans is on Royal Street and there are loads of other stores along Royal as well that you might enjoy perusing.

    What’s New Nola

This was a cute little shop filled with more New Orleans related items and also items from local NOLA artisans. I snagged a great little tray from here depicting the French Quarter.

5-in-1 New Orleans Ghost and Mystery Tour

While planning our trip, the Circus had requested a ghost tour. You all know that made me as happy as a clam! We opted to do this 5-in-1 ghost and mystery tour. It covered a little bit of everything – ghosts, voodoo, vampires and more.

New Orleans Itinerary - Haunted History 5-in-1 Tour

This is a walking tour, so if you’re taking kids along, make sure they are prepared. My kiddo had to sit a couple times when we stopped to listen to a story from the tour guide. And although she didn’t see an actual ghost like she wanted to on the tour, she did enjoy it. The tour guide really got her hopes up at one point when he told us all that he “guarantees we’ll see some spirits at our next stop.” Turns out, we were taking a break at Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop, which is a bar. The Circus’ face dropped and was not amused. Her reaction was priceless. ๐Ÿ˜‚

    Dinner at Meauxbar

For dinner, we went to Meauxbar in the Quarter – another absolutely delicious restaurant we discovered on this trip!

Eating in New Orleans - Meauxbar

First off, and I can’t stress this enough, get the duck fat popcorn. It’s exactly what it sounds like – popcorn tossed in duck fat. And it is everything. We all ate that up as fast we could, thus the nearly empty bowl there. As far as entrees, Grunt had the French onion grilled cheese and I had the steak – both were fabulous.

That’s a wrap for this visit to New Orleans – until next time, NOLA!
