How to Make Ornament Clusters

I am a Christmas ornament whore.

Not all ornaments though – only vintage ball ornaments.

And they never go on my tree – the tree is reserved for really meaningful ornaments – instead, these ornaments get scattered throughout the house and in clusters. My favorite is the clusters though.

Now, these clusters could be nothing new to you. It may just be that I was living under a rock for a very long time and when this idea dawned on me awhile back, it just seemed like the best thing ever. So, if you already knew how to do this…then why the hell didn’t you tell me?! If you didn’t, here you go.

Materials

  • Traditional Round Ornaments – breakable or shatter resistant. I use breakable because they are shinier.
  • Ribbon – you can use basic curling ribbon or prettier grosgrain or satin ribbon.

Steps

Step 1

Cut a long piece of ribbon. I cut mine longer than I need because I use the curly ribbon usually and like the long curly spiral on the end. String however many ornaments your little heart desires onto the ribbon.

I suggest random sizes with more smaller ones than larger ones. If you get too many larger ones, then sometimes the ornaments will pop off.

Don’t line all the same size up side-by-side – alternate.

Step 2

Tie the ends of the ribbon together to form a ball.

You don’t want to tie it super tight, but enough to where a larger ball of sorts or cluster is formed.

Step 3

Make it rain ornament clusters everywhere…

Where will you make it rain?

Ornament clusters of course.

Love this idea — I have an ornament addiction as well. I actually bought some really cheap (after Christmas of course) ornaments that are non-breakable. I think I’ll cluster them and hang them like kissing balls outside my front entrance. BTW I enjoy reading your blog every Friday. A very Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!!

That would be gorgeous, Joanna! I always look for great Christmas decor at the clearances after Christmas!! Also, sorry there wasn’t a Freak Show Friday post this Friday – I opted to take the rest of the holiday week off! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving!
