Sequined Coat Hangers

Last week when I showed you the faux wall moldings, many of you mentioned the sequined coat hangers.

Who knew a coat hanger could be so fabulous?

When I was trying to figure out how I could make frugal wall decor for the guest bedroom, I knew I wanted to have lots of inspiring and fun life quotes. I also wanted them to be fabulously displayed. And what better to display them with than sequined coat hangers.

Sequined Coat Hangers

This post contains affiliate links.

I bought an 8 pack of the Bumerang Curved Coat Hangers from IKEA for $5.

I bought four small rolls of stretch sequin ribbon in gold from Michael’s. It took two rolls per coat hanger. I think each roll was about $4 regular. Use your coupons or wait till its on sale to get it cheaper! That’s what I did!

After the sequin ribbon fabulous-ness was attained, I just wrapped it around the coat hanger, putting a dot of hot glue on the coat hanger every now and then to keep the ribbon in place.

I used Rub ‘N Buff to make the bottom bar gold.

I taped gold and white twine to the back from the Target Dollar Spot, then tied them on the coat hangers.

And aren’t those prints so fun?

I like to think of them as life quotes. Words to live by.

Words to live by in my crazy life anyway.

Electrical Tape Lampshade
Sometimes…

Rarely…

But it happens every once in a while…

Totally out of the blue…

I have a stroke of genius…

Or genius for me anyway… I’m sure most of you guys are way above my level.

As I was working on my guest bedroom / office makeover, I decided I needed a lamp for one of the nightstands.

And if you’re gonna have a lamp, you’re gonna need a lampshade.

So, I made over a lamp and picked up a basic white lampshade at Target for $8 on clearance.

We all knew that basic white lampshade wasn’t going to stay basic and white.

It needed something.

So, I asked myself: “Self, what can we do that won’t cost a dime to this lampshade?’

Self responded: “Self, grab the electrical tape, quick!”

And the electrical tape was attained and a black and white striped electrical tape lampshade was born.

This little black and white striped gem took about a whole five minutes to whip up.

Materials and Supplies:
- Lampshade
- Electrical Tape
- Scissors
Steps

Step 1

Cut strips of tape.

Step 2

Apply to lampshade.

Obviously, you really didn’t need those steps, but I’m trying to be a good DIY blogger.

Fun Fact: This lampshade didn’t work quite right on its intended lamp. Instead, it is sitting atop the Kate Spade lamp and the Kate Spade lampshade is on the recently made over lamp that you haven’t seen yet.

Ok – now what will you use electrical tape on??

DIY Animal Candleholders

Have you ever seen something, told yourself you could totally make that and then you found out, ummmm, no, I can’t do this.

Happens to me all the time. Truth.

I have had many crafting and DIY fails. And that’s ok.

Sometimes, I can salvage them. Sometimes, I don’t know whether to call it a fail or a win.

Here’s how I took my latest potential fail and still came out with something pretty.

Target Dollar Spot Trays Hack {A Fabulous Fifteen Minute Hack}

I’m not quite sure if this is considered a hack or an upcycle.

I’m a pathetic excuse for a DIY blogger, aren’t I?

I was definitely up-cycling these trays into something better, but I guess I’m also hacking them too?

I settled on a hack.

Because it sounds more scandalous.

And I’m nothing if I’m not scandalous.

If you only knew the half of it…..

Aren’t they so pretty?

Don’t they look expensive?

Don’t shatter my dreams if you don’t like them.

I am in love with them and just know they will look fabulous on my coming-soon bar cart.

So, seriously, these took less than 15 minutes to hack. They already came in those super cute green and blue colors.

Geez, the lighting is terrible in my craft room. But you can see where they were just $1, right?

And they also come in pink and yellow colors as well.

To do these, I took a gold Sharpie paint pen, and just ran it along the lines, edges, and corners of the tray.

Yup, real hardcore DIY stuff, y’all.

Each tray has little dots, so with the green one, I just pressed my marker over the dots to make the polka dot pattern.

Wouldn’t these be fabulous little gifts too?

Give it with a fab necklace or some smell good lotion.

I picked these up just last week and they had tons of them, so I’m sure you can still get some.

If you hurry.

Love trays?

Me too. Some, myself included, would even call me a tray whore. You can see the evidence for yourself:

Sassy Fabric Covered Message Board

Trash is most definitely a relative word.

I may or may not be the creepy lady stalking her neighbors as they take trash out to make sure they aren’t throwing something away I may want.

A similar occurrence as mentioned above may or may not have happened just last night.

And since I may or may not have a fondness for what others consider trash, I am stoked about this new series:

Lilly Pulitzer Inspired Wreath

Our second style icon for the summer soiree…Lilly Pulitzer.

Begin channeling bright floral prints, the sunshine, and all things fun.

My Lilly project:

A Lily Pulitzer Inspired Wreath.

And it may or may not be considered somewhat of a semi-fail…..I’ll explain in a bit…..

The minute I saw that bright floral fabric – I immediately thought Lily and thanked God because I had no clue what I was going to do for my Lily project until I saw it. Just to be sure, I wasn’t delusional, I sent a picture of the fabric to my friend, Lindsay, with “Lily, right???” below the picture. She concurred that the fabric was most definitely Lily.

Here’s what I used to make this wreath:

– Wreath Form

– 1/4 – 1/2 yard of fabric (Mine came from Hobby Lobby)

– Grosgrain Ribbon

– Hot Glue Gun

– Scissors

– Bling (I used vintage brooches, old cheap rings and earrings.)

Disregard the felt and pearls in the above photo. That was part of the fail. I told you, I’ll get there in a minute – I know you are dying to know.

First, lay your wreath out on the fabric. I bought WAY too much fabric. I bought 1 yard and probably only used 1/4 – 1/2 a yard.

Cut a small hole in the middle of fabric that is inside the wreath form and then triangle slits in the fabric that is inside the wreath form. That may not make sense, but check out the below pictures to see what I’m talking about.

Begin wrapping the wreath with the triangles and securing them with hot glue.

Trim the excess fabric as needed.

At this point, I tried making brightly colored felt flowers. FAIL. They looked horrendous.

Plan B: Vintage brooches, old earrings and rings.

I just stuck the brooches right through the wreath form. I really love some of them, so I wanted to be able to easily pull them out and wear them if I wanted to one day. I used hot glue on the old earrings.

At this point, I thought I was done. Wrong. When I put it up, there was styrofoam showing where I had cut the fabric.

Plan C: Cover showing styrofoam with ribbon.

New problem: when the wreath is hanging the aqua ribbon just squishes up behind the wreath and looks horrible. Fantastic.

Plan D: Cut strips from gift box to re-inforce the ribbon and make it stand up, rather than be squished.

I cut two strips and hot-glued it behind the aqua ribbon.

Another new problem: cardboard strip now shows on one side.

Plan E: Glue aqua ribbon on other side of cardboard strip.

Finally, all systems are a go. Except for the fact that the ribbon still looks a little funny. But, at this point, I was done solving wreath problems. I was ready to move on to world peace.

Complete fail?

Semi-Fail?

1/4 Fail?

Would Lilly approve?

DIY Decorative Horse Accessories

Have you guys noticed all these decorative animal home accessories that are out lately? Like this…

Or this one from Target that I have been eyeing for the past month…..

Well, I couldn’t spend $30+ on one of these when I knew I would probably get tired of it soon. So, I decided to make my own decorative horse accessories.

When I bought these little guys at the 127 yard sale months ago, my friend, Lindsay looked at me like I had gone bat-shit crazy.

I had a plan, though. They would become something magical. That was in August. So, it only took 6 months for them to become something magical. Whoops.

First, I spray painted them metallic gold. Gold makes everything magical.

I cut some old 2x4s we had into small rectangles. Then, I took that fabulous wrapping paper from Target that I put in the back of my liquor cabinet, and wrapped the 2x4s in it.

I used hot glue to seal the wrapping paper around the wood. I wanted it to stay put. Then, I just glued the horses on top. Just a dot on each horse’s foot.

I thought about using them as bookends, but when I tried that, they were just too small against the books, so they just sit on top of the books now.

By the way, these babies cost a quarter each, the wood was just lying around our house, I already had the spray paint, and the wrapping paper was $0.50 a roll and I barely used any of it for this. So less than $1 for both of these studs!

Magical, right?

DIY Tissue Paper Pom Poms (Easy and Fun)

Aren’t these tissue paper pom poms so fun?

Instead of a mobile in the vintage style nursery, I thought these would be much more pretty and stylish! And, we all know, my kid has gotta have style!

I used this simple tutorial from Martha Stewart, that you can find here. All you need is tissue paper, floral wire and fishing line.

Way easy and CHEAP!!!

I also made some of these for my daughter’s blue and pink birthday party. And notice those little tissue paper flowers in the mason jar, there? I used the same tutorial for those as I did the poms, I just made them on a smaller scale.
