Navy and Gold Chest Makeovers

Have I chatted with you about the guest bedroom before?

Why am I asking? I know the answer to this. Its no.

And why have you never heard of this guest bedroom before or seen photos of it?

Because its ugly.

Let’s be honest. What room is usually last on the list when it comes to decorating?

The guest bedroom.

Those poor guests. A.K.A my amazing in-laws.

Bless them. They deserve better.

And they will get it. It’s all starting with these navy and gold chest makeovers.

No frills. No intricate details. Just the simple combination.

And for me, that simple combination in this case was navy and gold.

Notice, I said makeovers in the title. Yep, there are two of these. A night stand and a chest of drawers. I think the night stand probably  qualifies as a chest because it certainly doesn’t seem like a “stand.”

Both of these are pretty solid, but had some issues.

And the top needed some love as well.

And then I pulled out my beloved, my coveted, my just-go-ahead-and-bury-me-with-it, HomeRight Finish Max paint sprayer*.

Heaven help. Why did I just show you that picture?

That would be one of those days when the circus went to preschool and I tend to go a little loco.

You don’t get to judge.

After a coat of primer, I painted the chests the same navy color I used on the $10 dresser turned buffet.

This is a really deep navy, so it took a few light coats to get the color uniform. The finish was still impeccable.

Wow, I don’t know that I’ve used that word before on the blog. Yay, Jenna for using big words!

But, that’s the beauty of the Finish Max, it has a fine finish that looks completely professional.

I was not parting with the hardware that these chests came with – I loved their vintage vibe. They got a coat of gold spray paint.

There was this inlay on the top of each chest. To highlight it, I went over it with a gold Sharpie paint pen*.

So, where is this guest bedroom headed?

My friends, that is a fabulous question.

Here’s what I know:

The Jonathan Adler inspired chair is staying.

The wall color is going.

Somewhere in all of it, there needs to be an office space.

And these chest makeovers were a fabulous start.

That’s about it.

Stayed tuned. It should be fun.

Now Jenna, you KNOW I’d love to win this! Would give me incentive to get my act together in 2014 and get at some projects around here!

And just reading the previous post about your nails lol… I’m a nail polish-aholic…I seriously have like 100 bottles of polish give or take 10. Girl, take the time to remove that!! Not good for your nails!

  2. says

Absolutely beautiful, Jenna! I love my navy blue! I’m glad you left the original hardware..its so pretty once painted.

I see you used your gold sharpie again. You’ll be proud to know this girl got herself a set! I think it was due time. On the other hand, I may be going overboard with it!

  3. Gillianne says

I’d paint 1) the scuffed headboard I picked up for my daughter’s room and 2) the equally scruffy but sturdy desk I use for sewing and crafting projects. I just repainted my home office, and that piece stands out painfully, just begging for a facelift to match the new freshness of the rest of the room.

  4. More Time Than Money! says

I have 4 huge formal dining room arm chairs that I use in different areas of our home and would love to paint them! I have been dragging my feet on getting to it and a sprayer would give me a giant jump start on the project.

  5. Shannon says

I have very OLD but not vintage or antique bedroom furniture (hand me down). It all NEEDS a new life. This is what I would paint (first)!

  6. marty says

I have wanted a sprayer for the longest time but was unsure which one to buy….you did a great job and I love reclaiming furniture from the trash or flea market and giving is new life and beautiful paint!

  7. lesley says

i have a plain jane wooden shelf that would be awesome painted a pretty sky blue for my beach-themed crafting room i am working on!

  8. Cassie says

I’d paint our pink bathroom. The previous owners painted EVERYTHING pink. The walls, ceiling, doors, cabinets, trim, etc. It’s so pink. We’d also use it to paint some other rooms and a few pieces of furniture.

  9. Esther says

I would love to win – I have tried so many paint sprayers and they don’t hold up. I’ve heard good things about this one!

  10. Kim Albritton says

So ready to repaint my master bath cabinetry. Even if I don’t win, may just have to purchase the Max Finish sprayer. All of your pieces look beautiful!

  11. chris aka monkey says

Jenna i almost fainted when i saw this give away,,hope you do not think i am greedy because i won the decals but man i would repaint the kitchen cabinet and my bed and one grandsons bed..actually anything that got in the way would get a nice coat of paint lol xx

  12. JaneEllen says

Ooooh, do I ever love that chest, it looks fantastic, love the hardware also. Your lamp is incredible with the chest. Everything looks so great. Question, do you have to use an air compressor with that sprayer? The sprayer looks pretty hefty so wondered about that as soon as I saw it. Great, awesome sprayer to have, the finish is so smooth. Can I come visit, I’m a good guest and up for baby sitting? lol.
I don’t see anything wrong with the photo, you’re working, what are you supposed to look like when you’re working. Sheesh, what not to wear would love it. I’m so sure we all look like we’re going to a party when we work.
The special little touch to top with gold sharpie sets off the dresser perfectly. Think your chest is a keeper.
Hope you’re enjoying your holiday season, time is rushing by.

  13. Teri says

So many painting projects…probably my husbands old chest. I’d love to use it somewhere, but the color just isn’t right. Thanks for the giveaway!

  14. Natalie says

Ohhhh, let me count the ways i could use the HomeRight sprayer? It would be so great to have a professional finish on my paited furniture projects.

  15. Lauren Brown says

I have an old oak dining room table that looks super dated. I was planning on having it professionally painted, but with a Home Right paint spayer I would have the courage the DIY the project myself!

  16. Jess Talkington says

FURNITURE! I’ve been dying to try one of these. A friend bought one to use on walls/trim and loved it. It’s on my Christmas list!

  17. Ruth says

I have a corner unit for my dining room thst I need to paint. Would come in handy. Have heard so much good things about these sprayers.!

  18. Carol Zimmerman says

I would paint all the second hand furniture I buy. Would love to give new life to all of it. What a great giveaway!!!

I want the Home Right sprayer so badly, and I plan to get one as some as my pocket book will allow me to. I really would love to win this more than I can express.

  22. Carol Hanson says

I would refinish a cute bookcase for my granddaughter and then finish painting the door and closet doors in my bedroom; finished the walls about 4 years ago so I think it’s time don’t you?

  23. says

WOW! What a transformation! The color is gorgeous and I LOVE the gold touches. Everything you touch turns to GOLD, ha! Man, I gotta get one of those paint sprayers!

  24. Piroska says

I have a couple of old dressers that I’d love to refinish. Not sure on the colours. I’m really liking the navy blue that you did!

  25. Fara says

What wouldn’t I paint!?! For starters, a sweet little telephone table from my college days. Next would be a massive end table that is so beat up!

  26. Babette says

Oh the things that I would paint!!! I would repaint my daughter’s dresser because it is chipping (my fault) and then get to the other projects I have waiting that would be finished quicker if I had this sprayer!! Love it! Love the navy, so nautical and regal. Thanks so much for the giveaway!

  27. Nina says

I can’t say EXACTLY what I would paint… But I AM moving soon! And one primary requirements of my new home will be a garage! So I’ll either be painting rooms in the new home! Or DIY projects in the garage! =)

  28. says

I have a antique buffet I bought at a garage sale years ago and used it as such until I inherited my great grandmothers. So I have now cut the legs off it and made a shelf in the top drawer and using it as a entertainment stand but it still needs to be painted!

  29. Kristen says

I would use this for furniture makeover projects. I recently repainted a dresser for my daughter and using store bought aerosol spray paint cans and this would have been a lifesaver or that project, I’m sure.

  30. Crystal F. says

I have SEVERAL furniture projects waiting to be finished. I’ve wanted a paint sprayer for a long time. I’d love to win. :)

  31. Carolyn says

My first project would be a roadside find. An old buffet. It is stripped but not sure what color to paint yet. I think that would be good practice.

  32. Karen Ennenga says

I have gotten the desire to be creative this year and have bought a bunch of pieces I want to paint but have been scared to get started. This looks like a great tool to get the job done right!

  33. Margo says

Sorry I don’t have a website but would love to. Since joining Pinterest and then following some of my favorite DIYers I began doing projects around my own home. I post on my Facebook page to share with my very small Facebook world. I would love to have a paint spray so I can paint my bedroom furniture that I’m very tired of, so winning this sprayer I could transform on a very tight budget. Thanks for considering me.

  34. Lynniepoo says

I would love to have a professional spray paint gun… I need to learn how to use those. I would paint my parents furniture that I had to purchase from their estate! I have so many memories of snooping in the top drawer, etc.

  35. barbara macaskill says

I would paint mine and my husband’s bureaus! They need lots of TLC! Thanks for the chance to win this amazing sprayer!!! I would think I had died and gone to heaven if I won!!

  36. Melissa S says

We are making custom built-ins for our office and I reaaly don’t want to have to paint it all by hand! This would be awesome!

  37. says

I saw this on Facebook and HAD to enter after reading about all the things you’ve used your sprayer for!! I almost didn’t make it, 25 minutes on the clock! lol. I would use the sprayer for multiple things, but after seeing your dresser make over I might finally be able to convince hubby to let me paint the furniture in our bedroom from wood to white!

  38. Stephanie Conner says

I would paint this pair of window shutters that I have so I can finally make them into magazine racks. I also have a pair of bi-fold closet doors that are to be made into a room divider that need to be painted as well. After that I’d purposely find things to paint, just so I could use the HomeRight Finish Max Paint Sprayer all the time.
