I’ve been keeping a secret.
I know, its not nice to keep secrets.
Please forgive me.
I’ve been doing a mini-makeover on my dining room.
You may not even recognize it, since the last time you saw it was on my home tour.
It all started when I found this dresser at a yard sale for $10.

Yep, the dresser was only $10.
Grunt Labor says it was only $10 because they didn’t want to carry it back inside their house. He may be right. This thing was so heavy. And I have lifted a lot of furniture in my time.
But, when I saw the $10 dresser, I knew there was a buffet in my future. Come hell or high water.
So, I had my electrician move my chandy so I could scoot the dining room table over.
All in the name of a buffet.
And now back to the $10 dresser.
It doesn’t look bad from afar, but upon further inspection, one can see that the paint job was horrendous. They had just painted right over the handles while still attached to the drawers, therefore, causing runs in the paint and making my job harder.
But, I persevered and after I had done enough sanding to my satisfaction (which really means, I gave up), I sprayed the entire thing down with Zinnser primer in my HomeRight Finish Max Paint Sprayer.
Why, yes, my garage floor is multi-colored. Its the new look, don’t you think?
Or maybe I just paint too much.
After the primer dried, I painted the base and drawers navy, once more with my paint sprayer and let it dry.
After the navy was good and dry, I took a can of Rust-Oleum Metallic Gold Spray Paint and sprayed the top edge and bottom lip of the buffet body as well as the inside trim of drawers.
I know, you are wondering why I went and messed up my beautiful navy paint job. Well, this was the easiest and most efficient way I could come up with to get this piece how I wanted it to look. I didn’t want to use a paint brush to paint all those nooks and crannies with the gold, but there isn’t a good metallic paint I can use in my sprayer, so I stuck with the trusty gold spray paint.
After the spray paint dried, I got back out my blue paint and touched up any places where the gold was that I didn’t want it to be.
You are thinking this took me forever.
I thought it would take forever as well.
We are both wrong. I figured out a trick.
With the navy, as long as I painted into the outer crevice of the molding, it was pretty easy and quick. This is what I mean:
You can’t really see inside the crevice, so wrong paint colors there wasn’t an issue.
After all the navy was dried, I went back with a creamy white along the insides of the drawer fronts and all the old hardware got a coat of gold spray paint. Finally, I finished it off with a coat of Polycrylic.
Hello ridiculous amounts of extra storage!
Here’s a little look at what else I’ve been doing in the dining room. The dining room wall has got a makeover since my home tour.
I’ll be showing you how I made that tassel garland and the silhouettes soon!

You did an absolute incredible job! I am so inspired by it, but I don’t think I could pull it off–I do better with distressed because it hides any mistakes.
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
I know what you mean, Susan! I didn’t think I could pull it off either, but it really was easier than I thought it would be! I’m the opposite, I tend to suck at distressing!

I love the way the buffet (that is what we called them when I was little too) turned out. But, I have to say that I had to comment on your garage floor!!!! Beth says
Absolutely beautiful!! I had seen the other credenza and thought hers was pretty too. You really did an amazing job!
I will have to try my sprayer. I’m too lazy and continue to paint by hand. So you sprayed the drawers blue,,,,then sprayed the gold,,,(how did you cover up the gold overspray? did you spray blue again or hand brush the blue?) And then when it came to
the inner panels of white, did you brush or spray??? Thanks so much in advance!!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Thanks, Beth! Yep, I sprayed the base and drawers blue, then sprayed the gold with spray paint. I just went over the gold overspray with the blue with a brush and small roller. I brushed the inner panels white! Hope this helps! It really was easier than it sounds!
Krista @ the happy housie says

I was wondering if this will work on laminate? I searched high and low for a dresser and 2 nightstands to match and the only thing I found was this horrible color of laminate. I would love for spray paint to be acceptable. But I have also ready your homemade chalk paint post. Which do you recommend?
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Hmmm…..so the primer I used on this piece says that it will work on laminate and then you could paint anything over it. I’m pretty confident chalk paint would work for sure. I guess it kind of depends on what route you want to go with your piece. Are you distressing it?
Hailee says
I dont think I am going to distress it. I have such a hard time messing up the paint job after working so hard to get it perfect. I went ahead and bought primer that says the same thing, that it works on all surfaces. Do you remember what color the Navy was exactly? I love the color! What kind of poly did you use that didnt turn the white yellow? The last time I used poly on a cream it turned a yellow color that I hated!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Totally know what you mean about distressing pieces! I usually only do it if the furniture has some flaws! The navy is Nocturnal Sea by Behr. LOVE it! I used Minwax Polycrylic. It is water based and won’t turn pieces yellow!
Angie says
This is so gorgeous! Amazing! I apologize in advance if this is an obvious question, but I’m wondering a bit about when you used a sprayer vs. a brush. I’m assuming you used a brush for everything after the gold spray paint (for touching up the navy and painting the creamy white)? Is that correct? Again, this is simply beautiful. Thanks for sharing!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
You are correct, Angie! I did a coat of navy first on the base of the buffet, then went back with the gold spray paint, then hand brushed the white and touched-up the navy with a brush as well!
Angie says
I LOVE bloggers who answer questions! Thank you!!! 🙂
Susie says
WHAT A VAST DIFFERENCE – OMG it’s looks like it cost way more. What a beautiful piece of furniture, and when you get tired of it…. Wow so many ideas, so little time. So clever, and creative, love your blog.
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
I still can’t believe I scored that dresser for only $10! And even more, I can’t believe how well it turned out. You are right – there are many more things it could be if we get tired of it there! That’s one thing I love about the piece so much!
