My Favorite Green Decorating Moves

I make no bones about my love of the color green in decorating. I will fully own up to the fact that I use it often and maybe too much for some people. I don’t care though. I’m not a quitter.

Meg from Green with Decor emailed me a couple months back and asked if I wanted to join in on a St. Patrick’s Day blog hop featuring green decor.

Ummm….hello….it’s like I was made to do this blog hop.

Of course, I said yes, but also told her that since we were moving to the 70’s Landing Pad, I might not have very many “new” green decorating tricks to share, but I could share my favorite green decorating moves. She was cool with that, so here we are and here are my favorite green decorating moves I’ve done. I feel it would be a sin to not honor the very first project that sparked my love of green…

Kate Spade Inspired Lamp

Had it not been for this beauty, I may never have discovered just how much I loved green in decorating. Or it would have taken me a long time. This single lamp, as ridiculously corny as it sounds, is what helped me figure out what my own style truly was – not what a magazine or Pinterest said it should be. And moving on…

Confetti Wall / Green Velvet Pillow / Black & White Pillow

This vignette is one of my favorites, mainly because of the vintage cowboy blanket that’s a family heirloom in my book, but also because of how random everything is, yet it worked so perfectly together. I thought for sure putting a cowboy hat and blanket against a gold confetti wall and throwing in a bold black and white graphic pillow and green velvet pillow would be a mistake. I’m so glad I was wrong though.

My Barstools / DIY Island / Navy and White Kitchen

And then, there’s my barstools. Don’t they just look gorgeous popping off that navy and white kitchen? They were also a simple makeover.

Malachite Credenza

I have likened this piece to a mullet – business in the front, party on top (instead of the back). The green malachite on top is actually wrapping paper.

IKEA Tarva Turned Bar Cabinet

This IKEA Tarva three-drawer dresser got turned into a bar cabinet – with a little help from green paint.

DIY Malachite Tray Tutorial

Obviously, malachite and I are pretty tight. This malachite tray wasn’t made with malachite at all – just paint. And it was so easy.

Green, Black and White French Country Chair Makeover

Hands down, probably, so not really hands-down, but you know what I mean, my favorite color combination is green paired with black and white – like in this modern french country chair makeover.

DIY Jadeite Tutorial

Not my favorite shade of green, but I won’t turn my nose up at it, this DIY jadeite was another easy project.

My favorite green velvet pillow also pairs perfectly with a plaid blanket.

Green Drapes / Brass Duck

The minute I saw these green drapes I knew they were destined for my living room. I love the combination of the green against the coral as well. Don’t look too close at my rug though – it obviously needs to be vacuumed. 😉

This green and white cane inspired accent wall gave a punch of color and pattern to my previously all-white bathroom.

$50 Bathroom Makeover

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.

Sometimes the best room makeovers are the ones that are unplanned.

Totally random, flying by the seat of your pants, out of the blue unplanned.

It happened in my living room.

It started with a black and white gallery wall, which led to a new rug, which led to new curtains.

And suddenly, I finally had a living room I loved.

And now its happened with the bathroom.

But the best part is that this random, little out of the blue makeover cost me just $50.

All that was needed was a little paint, a shower curtain, and some rearranging.

So. As my former students would say, “What had happened was….”

This green cane inspired accent wall.

And that prompted me to paint the pink ceiling white because it was clashing too much with the green.

And then I switched out the fabric under the sink that hides the pipes.

And then that black and white goodness led to this black and white shower curtain from Target.

And I nixed the shower cornice to keep it all light, bright and airy.

P.S. – That shower curtain is on sale for less than $20 at Target® right now!

And then I did a bit of editing and rearranging on the built-in shelves above the throne.

I added my little neon man…

I mean really, isn’t he just darling?

My Favorite Green Color Combinations for Decorating

It was love at first spray when I made the Kate Spade Inspired Lamp Makeover.

I had met my decorating color soulmate and there was no turning back.

Green and I went together as well as me and cheap beer.

Well, almost. Let’s face it – cheap beer will always have my heart. Oh, and Grunt Labor too.

I think one of the main reasons I love green so much is because it looks great with my second in line favorite colors.

Green + Navy

My Kitchen

Painting the lower cabinets navy was by far one of the best decisions I have ever made. My green barstools just pop off the navy and white.

French Country Chair Modern Makeover

I’ve begun a new love affair.

Grunt Labor doesn’t mind a bit.

Its more beautiful than I ever dreamed.

Its with green.

And black and white stripes.

Really, its just with the green, black and white combination in general.

I never considered the combination until my Enchanting green paint swatch accidentally fell on top of some black and white fabric and I was like…

Oh My Gosh.

Of course, I totally said that in the style of Usher’s song.

At that point, I did a walk-through of my house to determine which piece of furniture would be my next victim.

The lucky guy was this french country chair which ended up with a modern makeover.

If you’ve been around here for a while, you may remember this chair.

This is the second time that its gotten a makeover. First, it looked like this:

Apparently, I feel that this chair should always have some green on it. I didn’t dislike it painted white with green velvet upholstery, but I wasn’t attached to it either and it seemed like this chair had the perfect lines for my new love affair.

I started by removing the cushion and upholstery on the arms, then priming it with Ready.

Ready is the primer in the Velvet Finishes paint line. Lots of times you don’t have to prime the pieces you are painting with Velvet Finishes, but this chair had a semi-gloss finish, so priming was recommended.

I sprayed Ready over the entire chair and let it dry.

After the chair was dry, I used Enchanting to paint it.

Enchanting is one of my new favorite colors in this line. It. Is. Gorgeous. I used the other green color, Baroque, on the IKEA Tarva dresser turned drink bar last fall and fell in love with it. Its a darker green. Enchanting is brighter than Baroque. They are both stunning and I’ll never be able to choose between them now.

I used a good quality paintbrush to apply the paint.

With all the curves and nooks and crannies on this piece, it took about five light coats to get the color even, but it was so worth it. I didn’t put a topcoat of any sort on this chair – there’s already one built into the paint. Since this chair doesn’t get a whole lot of use, I didn’t think it would need anything extra.

The black and white fabric is some that I had left over from the shower curtains. Its quickly becoming my go-to fabric that works with anything. You also saw the outdoor version of it in action on my colorful screened-in porch makeover. Does it not pair beautifully with the Enchanting?

Am I right or am I right?

And yes, that black and white wall is also new – details coming soon…

The only thing I wish I would have done differently is on that little bit of upholstery on the arms. I totally wasn’t thinking and made the fabric vertical on it, instead of horizontal across the arm. Thus, I got one big black stripe and no white there. I didn’t realize my mistake until after one arm was completely done and I wasn’t changing it at that point.

Ain’t nobody got time for that.

It doesn’t change how I feel about this chair one bit though…

This is going to be an ~~fabulous~~ enchanting love affair.
