As I write this post, I am sitting in the most colorful space in my home.
I dare you to step into the screened-in porch and not be happy.
Double Triple Dog Dare You.
And if you do step out here, and you aren’t happy, I’ve got a cheap beer for ya and a kid is bound to turn the corner at any moment riding a plastic pink flamingo.
Heck, you just smiled as you read that last sentence, didn’t you?
Sweet friends, who put up with way too much craziness from me, welcome to my back porch.
Remember that time, just a year ago when I did another porch makeover?
On this exact same porch.
Yep, I realized this year that I was lazy with that makeover.
Basically all I did was make it livable. I painted the floor, threw out a few new cushions, made a chalkboard, and called it a day.
It looked like this in the end:
Wah, wah, wah.
It was boring and totally did not scream “RAIN ON A TIN ROOF” or “JENNA LAFEVOR” or even “FUN.”
Round two of the porch makeover was a success though.
I painted the porch floor in a striped pattern. I’m being all fancy and calling it a faux rug.
Its ok if you also want to call it amazing-ness. I won’t get mad.
With the addition of the deck, we were able to move some of the chairs and furniture from the screened-in porch onto the deck. This allowed me to have the perfect nook for our table and add in some made over chairs (furthering my chair hoarding tendencies). The chairs are probably meant for inside, but they bring some great coziness to the porch.
I made a super simple table runner (a.k.a. I just cut out a long rectangle) with the same fabric I used on the 15 minute placemats.
Mama bought me the round serving tray from the Oh Joy! line at Target as well as the napkins. It goes perfectly out here since it picks up the green color in the floor. She told me I had to actually use the napkins and not hoard them away for a DIY project or special occasions…
She knows me so well.
The Audrey Hepburn Inspired Chandelier hangs over the table for extra lighting at night. It also pulls some pink over from the accent pillows that are beside the bar table…
I placed the two arm chairs on either side of the table and added some seriously fun, colorful, and modern pillows to them.
The pillows make it easy to pull in just about any color. So yea, it may be considered cheating in the decor world by doing that, but it works for me.
I’ll fly my own decorating freak flag as long as they’ll let me.
The bar table is all set. I found those plastic wine glasses on clearance in the Dollar Spot at Target for $0.30 each. I’m leaving a small tray of washi tape out there so guests can customize their glasses – easy and fun!
Across from the bar table is a lounge-y type area.
Well, a lounge-y type area for one person anyway.
Me.
I hung the pink flamingos on the wall for a fun little touch (and possibly to keep the circus from riding them all the time). I also glittered up some mason jars for sparkly mason jar lanterns.
I brought the black and white from the chair cushions over to the chaise with a pillow.
I am still loving the leopard print table out here – especially because its the perfect place for my cheap beer to sit.
The fiddle leaf fig goes back and forth between here and the dining room – I’m trying really hard to keep it alive and I’m hoping those rough looking spots on the bottom leaves don’t mean its going south soon.
I’m going to have all the details on the rest of the porch projects coming soon!
Have you spruced up your outdoor spaces this year? What’d ya do?
Until next time, if you need me, you know exactly where I’ll be…
Can you please make sure someone is refreshing my beer from time to time? Mmkay? Thanks.

Such a delightfully fun spot! I am so glad I am not the only one who hoards chairs! Perhaps we should have a club! 🙂
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
We should totally have a club – we could share tips on how to deal with hubbies who don’t always support our chair hoarding tendencies! haha!

April says
Great makeover! I wish my porch looked like that! Alas, my porch is teeny-tiny and not private at all, so we don’t even use it. We just got some blinds from Wayfair though that go all the way down to the floor to block the evening sun, so it’s a little private now so maybe we’ll actually start using it?
Anyway, recently I read that if you’re inconsistent with watering for plants then they tend to brown on the tips of the leaves. I’ve been wondering for years why two of my plants (including a spider plant) always had brown tips! So I repotted my spider plant, which was entirely roots, into a bigger pot with actual soil and hopefully that’ll help fix the inconsistent watering problem! Do you think that could be your fig problem?
Otherwise, I know another culprit is my cat who likes to graze on my plants. After they bite the leaves they turn brown. 😛
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Thanks, April! This is the first summer that we have really used the heck out of our porch – making it more inviting made all the difference! Thanks for the plant tip – I was reading somewhere where it said the same thing – it also said to make sure water didn’t get on the leaves. I’ve gotta try a little harder!
Krista @ the happy housie says
LOVE LOVE LOVE, what else can I say?? Seriously this space is FUN! Pinned and sharing on my FB page… wish I could truly come by for a summer bevy on your porch and listen to your fab accent again!!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Thanks, Krista! Girl, you can totally come stay with me instead of camping. Your boys can pitch a tent in the backyard and you can stay in the nice air-conditioned indoors. And of course, we will have cocktails on the porch.
charlene says
I love it! You did a great job, and since I love color this fits me perfectly, except for one thing. As I would lay on my loungey thing I think I would not be able to focus on anything except the lattice behind the rail. Have you thought of painting that white to hide it a little more or go for one of those crazy colors you got and use it for another big pop of color. But really I think you did a great job transforming the room, that to me even seems like it fits your personality, and this is the first time on your site! Keep up the great and colorful work!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Thanks! I totally know what you mean, Charlene. I wanted to paint it white or another color, but we have a dog in the backyard there and she jumps on the lattice all the time. In fact, that’s why its up – to keep her from ripping the screening to shreds. So, its stained because that hides the dirt she gets on it best.
