I have been waiting to show you these for a month. It has been so hard to keep them a secret…

What do you think? Ok, yes, they do have some Kate in them with that kelly green. But, don’t those blue and white stripes just totally make them Ralph?
I am in love with them. Really, I’m in love with every project I’ve done for the Summer Soiree Style Series. I have truly surprised myself.
Here’s what they looked like before:
Just your basic industrial vibe barstools. I didn’t dislike them, but I knew they could be better.
After making my Kate Spade lamp, I knew I wanted more kelly green in my living room, and these barstools were the perfect pieces for it. I wanted the seat to be contrasting, but work well with the green, so I went for the classic Ralph Lauren navy blue stripes.

First, I took the back rest apart from the seat, cleaned them up well, and set them up in my super hi-tech spray painting station.
They got 2 coats of Rust-Oleum spray paint in Forest Green and a clear gloss topcoat, also Rust-Oleum. My go-to spray paint is always Rust-Oleum. Never once have I been unsatisfied with its results.
While the stools were drying, I went to upholstering the seats with white fabric. I had to put a small nut and bolt through the seat to be able to tighten it down once I got it back on the stool. Originally , the seats had just been tacked down.
Once the stools were dry, I put the seats back on. And where are those navy stripes, you ask? I didn’t have any navy and white striped material, so I taped off the seats and painted the navy stripes on.
It took about 2 1/2 coats to get the blue evened out. I just used a sample pot of regular latex paint I had.
I put Rub ‘N Buff along the bottom ring to add a pop of gold.
And that’s it! It was simple and cheap and now I have amazeballs Ralph Lauren barstools. And you don’t. haha. I’m kidding. I’m not really that mean.
Too much green? I think not. Hmmmm….maybe I should have called these “Kate meets Ralph Barstools…” Too late now!

I love the combination of kelly green and navy blue. Your bar stools look great and I know you have to be so pleased with them.
I like how you put them on flowerpots to elevate them to paint. That’s a great tip (pinning it)!
I am pinning and can’t wait to share this on my FB page.
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Thank you so much, Paula! I love the combination too! Thanks for the pin and FB love! I actually have your super cute chair makeover scheduled to post on FB tomorrow, I think?!

Condo Blues says
I normally like the industrial look of the Before stools but the crisp lines and color combo makes me like the after better.
Also, there is no such thing as too much kelly green.
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
I’m glad someone else feels there can never be enough kelly green! I’m the same way – I usually like the industrial look, but these just needed something else!
Hollie @ I'm Busy Procrastinating says
Saw your link over at My Repurposed Life. The green is definitely eye catching and fun! Do you worry that the spray paint and/or Rub ‘n Buff will get scratched off with us? I always wonder that when I see spray painted chairs and stools, because people put their feet on them, or metal parts of clothing rub against them. I have some industrial metal stools that I’d like to change the color on, but I was thinking I’d need to have them professionally powder coated for the finish to stay looking nice.
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
I don’t worry too much about it, Hollie. I put a protective top coat over the whole thing when I was done. I have lots of spray painted pieces that haven’t gotten scratched up yet. So far, the stools are holding up great!
Mandy Hank says

Ann Marie @ Twice Lovely says
I’m wondering how these stools have held up with use? I was thinking about getting some from a school supply website, but I’m wondering if they’re sturdy and going to last with daily use from kids. Thanks for the info! These look great!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Hi Ann Marie! The stools have held up wonderfully!!! We are not always kind to them either. They get pushed into the island all the time by the kid. So far, no scratches or anything on the paint job. I did redo the upholstery because they were stained a bit, but that’s it! And also – the website that you are looking to purchase some from – are they the same kind as mine?? Because I would really love to have a third one! Thanks!
Ann Marie @ Twice Lovely says
They look just like yours! Here’s where I saw them: http://www.webstaurantstore.com/national-public-seating-6224hb-25-33-adjustable-round-hardboard-lab-stool-with-adjustable-backrest/3866224HB.html
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
You have totally made my day!! Thank you!!
Sherry says
Wow!!!!!! Jenna you have outdone yourself. Those are fantabulous!!!!!! Seriously, I can’t believe they started out as those uncomfortable, clinical looking stools and ended up looking like they would be at home in an upscale yacht club or as you shown them. Amazing job!! Love the color combination too! Kind of brings in a preppy vibe without saying, “You can’t sit here unless Mummy and Daddy have a house in Hamptions, right Blythe?” Lol
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
hahahaha!!! You never cease to make me laugh, Sherry!!! Ahhh…..a house in the Hamptons and a yacht club…. a girl can dream…. Thanks!

Thanks, Mary! Yep, they were the closest things! haha!
