Decorating Ideas for Knotty Pine Paneling

Have knotty pine paneling in your home and not sure what to do with it? Before you paint over it or tear it out, try these knotty pine walls decorating ideas – it just might make you love that paneling after all.

As you know from my Ramblings post a few weeks ago, I had three makeover projects underway at the 70’s Landing Pad – the mudroom/laundry room, the guest room and the guest bathroom. The mudroom is finished, but the other two are still in progress and I have until Thursday night to finish them. That’s when the Man of Questionable Honor and his wife show up. As you might imagine, it is madness here.

At the same time, I’ve also been working on a few projects at the farm including the design plan / color scheme for the den and adding more color to the kitchen. So basically, I’m just asking for a mental breakdown.

For the most part though, with the exception of some damaged drywall on the ceiling which did cause a full-on “Screw it. I’m done for the day,” attack on Friday, the den is coming together pretty well. I’ve just been adding to the kitchen as I find different things, so it hasn’t really been all that stressful.

As you might remember, both the farmhouse den and kitchen are clad with knotty pine tongue and groove walls. Gasp!

While most people would be reaching for a can of paint or a sledgehammer, I absolutely refuse to do either. You see, I love that damn pine paneling. I can’t imagine that house without it. In fact, when we got the farmhouse house back from the previous tenants, my number one fear was that they had painted the paneling. When my uncle called me as he was walking through the house for the first time after the tenants had moved out, his words were, “It’s bad. Really bad. But the paneling is ok.” Everything else can be fixed, but that paneling, by God, you couldn’t just replace it with drywall. It’s got over 50 years of grease from fried chicken, cigarette smoke and memories in it. There are just some things that can’t be replaced.

Obviously, I could write a sonnet about this damn paneling.

So, in a nutshell, the paneling and I work together. Perhaps, I should have just said that in the beginning and spared you all my ode to the paneling.

So far, I’ve come up with three great ways, in my opinion, to make knotty pine paneling shine in a space.

Disclosure: Minted provided me with some of the art for these spaces. Bellacor provided me with the lighting for the den. All opinions are 100% mine. This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

Knotty Pine Paneling: How to Decorate With It

Colors that Go with Knotty Pine

Obviously, knotty pine rooms are going to be very brown. Typically, you’re going to have a neutral flooring as well, whether it’s carpet or hardwood. In order to keep the space from just being a brown pit, add some color, but you want to balance it all out with a neutral.

    Chair Upholstery

I’ve found that blues and greens work really well with paneling. The den isn’t quite finished yet (I still have to get pillows and draperies made as well as a few other things), but so far I have added in these two green chairs and this rug and it’s made a huge difference.

I couldn’t afford new chairs, so I stalked Facebook marketplace for a while and found a set of chairs that I liked for only $50, then had them recovered in this material. Chattanooga folks, I used Don’s Trim Shop and they did an excellent job as well as having the best price! The only thing I would have done differently is used some thicker material for the upholstery. This one works, but it is thin. I didn’t realize that when I ordered it.

I layered in my beloved cowboy blanket on one of the chairs to add more pattern and color. I’m also going to have pillows made for these chairs in a floral print to soften them a bit.

I got super lucky and found the 8′ x 10′ area rug at Ross one day. I wasn’t even looking at rugs that day, but literally stumbled upon it while in the store. It was $50!

Now, I don’t plan on filling the entire space with navy and dark greens. That would make it too dark. Opposite these chairs, I’m going to put in a neutral loveseat in either beige or cream. I just haven’t found one that I like yet that also fits in my budget. The lighter upholstery on the loveseat will help to lighten up the space more too.

In the kitchen, I’ve been working on this wall and have pulled in lots of different colors here.

I’ve still got that green and navy going on with the barstools that help to anchor all the color, but I also added in bright pops of color with the art. I also balanced all of that color out by going with lots of white backgrounds and frames on the art.

So, pull in color, but balance it out with lighter neutrals.

Make the Knotty Pine Walls Sing

It is no secret around here that I love a great piece of art. I am picky about my art though. It always has to meet at least one of two conditions though: it has a special meaning to me or my family or it’s love at first sight.

With the pine walls, I knew that adding gorgeous art would really make the walls sing. Minted is one of my go-to places for great art. I love that you can choose to buy just the art prints or you can choose to have it framed – and the selection of frames is great.

In the den, the star of the show is, as you’ve already seen, the cow.

Faze Wall Art Vertical / Faze Wall Art Horizontal

This piece of art was both one of those instant loves and also meaningful. Originally, I thought I would fill the den with lots of different floral prints to soften the walls, but then I saw this little guy and the deal was sealed. I come from a long line of cattle farmers, so this one also has special meaning. This one is called Faze. The vertical version is sold out, but you can still get this print in a horizontal version here.

Colors that go with Knotty Pine - Greens - Rain on a Tin Roof

I went with the French Farmhouse frame for this one. It has pretty corner details and a whitewashed finish, which looks good against the paneling.

Along one wall in the den, we have a closet and two doors open against this wall on either side. There’s no place for furniture along this wall, so we opted to put in more art and meaningful objects here.

Pine Paneling - Meaningful Art - Rain on a Tin Roof

The wooden yoke above the closet was my great-grandfather’s that my Pap had put in the shed years and years ago. We brought it in, cleaned it up and mounted it on the wall. On either side of the closet doors, I mixed art and little mementos from both my Pap and Grunt’s grandfather.

    America Print

When we cleaned out Grunt’s grandparent’s house back in the fall, we brought home two of his grandfather’s military hats and a mounted bayonet that had been given to him while he was stationed in Okinawa in the 60’s. When I saw this America print, I knew it would be the perfect compliment to these pieces.

On the other side, there’s a nod to my Pap.

    Open Gate Art Print

Grunt actually picked out this piece of art, Open Gate, it just happened to fit perfectly beneath my Pap’s belt and a couple of pieces from his old truck.

DIY Art on Knotty Pine Walls - Rain on a Tin Roof

Folks, if you ever want to hang a belt on the wall, just know it will take lots of zip ties and patience.

I had pulled a few pieces off my Pap’s old truck a couple of years ago and finally found the perfect place for them. I mounted one of the Cheyenne tags and the center of the steering wheel in a shadow box and hung them above the belt.

The kitchen wall has a variety of different pieces of art and objects. This is the one full wall in that space where I can really add color in. The rest of the kitchen is cabinetry, counters and appliances.

    Orange Print

The orange print was one of the first pieces I got for this space. I knew the bright colors would be the perfect punch of color for the kitchen. I’ve also mixed in a couple of family photos on this wall.

    Chair Art Print

The strawberry plaque was my Grannie’s that she used to have hanging in here, as was the Board of Education. The back of it is actually signed by many of her former students. The chair print, called Family Reunion (Uncle James), is a new addition. I knew it was coming to my house as soon as I saw it. My grandparents had a couple of those kinds of chairs at one point and I remember them sitting on the hill in them.

Pine Paneling in a Kitchen - using colorful art to decorate it - Rain on a Tin Roof

    Hummingbird Art Print

On the other side, I have a picture of me and Grannie and two more of her things that she had hanging in the kitchen – the Peggy’s Kitchen and the Some Visitors Bring Happiness sign – that sign has always cracked me up. The little hummingbird is a new addition. Grunt’s grandmother liked hummingbirds, so I got it and put it in here as a nod to her.

Add a Touch of Shine to Knotty Pine Paneling

And finally, my last tip for decorating with knotty pine walls – give it some shine.

Shiny Light Fixtures with Knotty Pine Paneling in the Den - Rain on a Tin Roof

I think that every room looks better with a touch of sparkle. In the den, I added a bit of this with a new lighting fixture from Bellacor.

Pendant Lighting against Knotty Pine Walls - Rain on a Tin Roof

Jaxon Polished Nickel Four Light Chandelier

This is called a chandelier light, but I feel like it’s more of a pendant light. Either way, the sparkle of the polished nickel was exactly what this room needed. It lightens up the space and gives it a polished feel. Who says knotty pine can’t be a little fancy?

The lines of this fixture are pretty traditional though, so I feel like it will stand the test of time in terms of decorating trends – just like I’m making the knotty pine paneling stand the test of time.

How to Make Wood Paneling Look Modern Without Painting It: Five Ways

Is part of your home sporting those 70’s wood paneled walls? Before you paint the paneling, give these ideas a try first! Keep reading to find out how to make wood paneling look modern – without painting it! You might just be surprised at the outcome!

Not to be Captain Obvious, but I am all for making your home look good, especially considering this is primarily a home decorating blog.

I am all for updating those laminate countertops, hiding those popcorn ceilings, ripping up the wall-to-wall carpeting and other things of that nature.

But sometimes, every once in a while, I prefer to keep those “old” design aesthetics and work with them, instead of against them.

I’m talking about My Jungle Room, folks.

How to Decorate Wood Paneling Without Painting

In the Jungle Room, or the den if you want to be so boring as to call it that, we kept the original wood paneling.

I will be the first to say that my initial instinct when I saw this space was to rip all the paneling out. However, budget and seeing a friend’s updated 70’s paneled walls in action helped to change my mind and give it a whirl. Here’s what the space looked like before:

How to Make Wood Paneling Look Modern: The Paneling Before

    Sexy, no? hehehehe

Now, here’s what I did to make that paneling work and look good.

How to Decorate Wood Paneling Without Painting It

This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

    1. Paint the trim

Yes, there is some painting involved, but NOT of the paneling – just the trim around the paneling.

I first saw painted trim paired with paneling at my friend Kellie’s house. She had paneling in much of her den and kitchen and had painted the trim in those areas black. It gave off a really vintage, retro kind of vibe to me and I liked that.

How to Make Wood Paneling Look Good Without Painting

I painted all the trim, the bookshelves, the ledge that runs along one side of the room and the fireplace Limousine Leather by Behr, which is my go-to black paint color. After doing that, the paneling was definitely looking better, but I wasn’t completely sold just yet.

    2. Bring in solid colors on furniture.

From that point, I decided that to make the paneling more of a backdrop rather than a focal point, I needed to bring in more solid colors on the furniture.

How to Decorate Around Wood Paneling

Sofa / Fur Throw / Rug

Luckily, I found this sofa on Craigslist and it worked perfectly. It added more black into the space which helped to pull out the black on the trim even more.

    Wood Paneling Ideas

    Navy End Tables

I also brought in these solid navy side tables, which brought more color into the space. Side note: I am planning to paint these red, which I think will look even better in the jungle room.

    3. Create multiple focal points.

I know. I’m probably breaking some design rule with this one. That never stopped me before and I certainly didn’t plan on letting it stop me now though. Once more, to make the paneling seem like more of a backdrop, I created two different focal points when you first walked into the room. The first was the fireplace.

What To Do With Wood Paneling

By painting the fireplace a solid black, it actually stood out more, rather than blending into the paneling as it did before with the reddish bricks.

I also created another focal point above the sofa.

    Wood Paneling Makeover Ideas

    Ocean Avenue Art

There, I used the ledge above the sofa to place a vintage brass lamp, the Ocean Avenue art, a family picture and antlers on the wall.

    4. Use eye-catching art.

This one is kind of a no-brainer. What’s the best way to distract someone’s eye? Give them something eye-catching to look at.

Of course, you just saw the vignette above where I did this with the Ocean Avenue art above the sofa. I also did it on the fireplace mantel.

Wood Paneling Makeover - Black Fireplace

    Cheetah Print

On the fireplace, I used a traditional piece of art, this cheetah print, and something a little non-traditional, but that grabbed the eye’s attention – those little red cowboy boots.

How to Update Wood Paneling Without Painting - paint the fireplace black

Also along the fireplace mantel is a framed record, mine and Grunt Labor’s song, and some DIY text art that also snags the eye with it’s red hue.

    5. Layer in texture and pattern.

Not only did this final trick help to make the jungle room a tad more cozier, but it also brought in other elements that worked well with the paneling – texture and pattern.

The biggest way I brought these two things in was with the rug.

How to Make Wood Paneling Look Good

    Zebra Print Rug

Without the rug, the floor would have been quite bland. The pattern and texture of the zebra print rug worked well to bring the eye to the floor.

    How to Decorate Wood Paneling

Fur Throw / Malachite Side Table

I also added in more texture with the fur throw (which added to the jungle room vibe as well). The malachite side table brought in more color, which the room needed, as well as pattern.

I also used the snakeskin lamps, green throw pillow and black and cream pouf that you saw in earlier photos above to bring in more texture and pattern.

I realize wood paneling is still something many would prefer to ditch. That’s cool – to each his own. Around here though, we choose to decorate around wood paneling. You’ll find us here flying our freak flag in the jungle room clad with 70’s wood paneling – and loving every minute of it.

  • Welcome to the jungle.

    Welcome to the jungle.

There is one thing I really wish I could make happen when a person walks into our den.

Either Guns N’ Roses Welcome to the Jungle or an Elvis song would start playing automatically.

Alas, my skills aren’t capable of such an epic event.

Either way, welcome to the jungle room, otherwise known as our den. It’s inspired by, you guessed it, Elvis’ jungle room, but has our own twist on it of course.

Disclosure: Mohawk Home provided me with the rug for this space and Minted provided me with some of the art. However, all opinions and bringing paneling back in style are 100% mine. This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

    The Jungle Room Den Makeover

    We started with this….

BEFORE: The Jungle Room Den Makeover

    And now we’re here…

The Jungle Room Den Makeover inspired by Elvis' Jungle Room: They kept the paneling and it actually looks really good with the black trim! | Zebra Print Rug | Malachite Side Table | Black Leather Chesterfield couch | Black Painted Brick Fireplace | Paneled Walls

Rug / Trim and Fireplace Color / Sofa / Light Fixture

Yes, gasp, we kept the paneling. And we love it.

Besides the furniture of course, all we actually did in here was switch out the light fixtures, paint the trim and the fireplace. Can you believe how different it looks just with those three changes?

I really really wanted to give the paneling a try. Grunt Labor really didn’t. I had seen my friend, Kellie’s house where she kept the paneling and it looked great. Also, I didn’t want to spend any more money than we had to on the renovation. And it is the 70’s Landing Pad, I really wanted to give a nod to the house and it’s roots with the design and the paneling helped to do that. Grunt and I negotiated and came to an agreement that I could keep the paneling as long as he gets a bigger television by the end of the year. I think I got the better end of the deal, he thinks he did. So obviously it was a pretty good deal.

Let’s back up for a second though, before you enter the den, when you come down the stairs, you’re greeted by this..

The Jungle Room Den Makeover inspired by Elvis' Jungle Room: Watercolor Sunglasses Art

Ray Bans Art / Brass Wall Sconce

I was trying to keep the den more “manly” than the living room so that Grunt Labor would have a space that was more him than me. I saw this sunglasses watercolor and knew it would be great for setting that tone before you entered the den. Grunt Labor has a pair of those glasses himself and I think it also lends a good vibe to the jungle room.

The Jungle Room Den Makeover inspired by Elvis' Jungle Room: They kept the paneling and it actually looks good with the black trim! | Painted Fireplace | Paneled Walls | Black Interior Design

I painted all the trim, bookshelves and fireplace in the den in semi-gloss Limousine Leather by Behr, which is my go-to black paint color.

The Jungle Room Den Makeover inspired by Elvis' Jungle Room: Black Painted Brick Fireplace | Records as Art | Cowboy Boots as Decor

I really wanted some pops of red off the black fireplace so I brought in the Shut Your Mouth art (it was just DIY art I made on PicMonkey) from the gallery wall at our previous house and threw up my little red boots from when I was a kid and also the same ones the Circus wore out. I snagged the single of mine and Grunt Labor’s song, Your Love, a while back and had been holding onto it forever. It found it’s perfect place on top of the mantel.

The Jungle Room Den Makeover inspired by Elvis' Jungle Room: Black Painted Brick Fireplace | Cheetah Art | Cowboy Boots as Decor

Cheetah Art / Fireplace Paint Color

And since it is the jungle room, I of course had to give nods to some wild animals. I found this cheetah print on Minted and had it framed in a matte brass frame to pop off the fireplace and also coordinate with the light fixtures in the room.

The most challenging aspect of this makeover for me were those built-in shelves.

The Jungle Room Den Makeover inspired by Elvis' Jungle Room: They kept the paneling and it actually looks good with the black trim! | Painted Fireplace | Paneled Walls | Black Interior Design

Y’all, larger scaled shelves elude me in terms of styling. The ones are the right weren’t so bad, they were actually smaller than the ones on the left.

The Jungle Room Den Makeover inspired by Elvis' Jungle Room: They kept the paneling and it actually looks really good with the black trim!

Brass Horse (similar ones) / Copper Frames

I pretty easily styled those without making it look too cluttered. I just added in a few framed pictures and trinkets. One goal of mine in this house was to have more framed family photos, whether candid or posed out, so the shelves gave me the perfect opportunity for that. I put framed photos of the Circus and my Pap when he was a kid on the top shelf and a photo from our wedding on the bottom shelf. However, on the other side of the fireplace it seemed everything I did made the shelves look like a cluttered mess.

The Jungle Room Den Makeover inspired by Elvis' Jungle Room

Brass Horse Head Bookend (similar ones) / Magnifying Glass & Letter Opener Set  / Vintage Travel Clock (similar ones)

Luck was on my side though and my father-in-law sent up a set of his old law books – all with beautiful green covers. I used those throughout the shelves and it worked out nicely. That photo there is my in-laws on their wedding day. It’s one of my favorite pictures. They laughed at me when I first framed it. 🙂

The Jungle Room Den Makeover inspired by Elvis' Jungle Room: They kept the paneling and it actually looks really good with the black trim! | Zebra Print Rug | Malachite Side Table | Black Leather Chesterfield couch

Sofa / Malachite Table / Navy Side Tables / Fur Throw / Rug

If there was one thing that I got deals of a lifetime on with this house, it’s the sofas. The living room sofa was a steal of a deal and a beauty. This sofa, which is actually the Gordon Tufted Chesterfield Sofa from Home Decorators Collection was a Craigslist find. The lady selling it had ordered it for her bedroom sitting area and once she got it, she decided it was more for a den and didn’t want to use it in her bedroom. Yes please. I will take that off your hands for hundreds less than it would cost new. She had literally never used it one single time, y’all! I drug Grunt and Bill out in the freezing rain (literally, freezing rain) to buy it because I was so scared someone else would get it before I could.

The Jungle Room Den Makeover inspired by Elvis' Jungle Room: They kept the paneling and it actually looks really good with the black trim! | Vintage Brass Lamp | Antlers | Palm Beach Art

    Ocean Avenue Art Print

There’s a ledge that runs across the wall the couch is against. I created this small vignette just above the couch to create another focal point in the space as well. The brass lamp was a vintage find and I’ve had the antlers for quite a while. Grunt Labor picked out the vintage car and palm print, which is called Ocean Avenue. He said it reminded him of Isle of Palms, which is our favorite beach destination. A photo of Grunt and his Grandpa digging up dirt worked in perfectly with this vignette too.

The Jungle Room Den Makeover inspired by Elvis' Jungle Room: They kept the paneling and it actually looks really good with the black trim! | Zebra Print Rug | Black Leather Chesterfield couch

Navy End Table / Oversized Jack / Sofa

For now, we have the navy end tables in here. I really love their lines and plan on keeping them, but not sure if I should paint them. I thought the navy might clash too much against the black, but it doesn’t seem to. What do you think? The tables are topped with the snakeskin lamps. I did have those in our master bedroom, but realized they most definitely fit in better in the jungle room. 😉

The Jungle Room Den Makeover inspired by Elvis' Jungle Room: They kept the paneling and it actually looks really good with the black trim! | Zebra Print Rug | Malachite Side Table | Black Leather Chesterfield couch | Fur Throw

    Fur Throw/ Malachite Table

The fur throw used to be in the guest room at our previous house. However, he wasn’t using it over here, so I snagged it for the den for now.

The Jungle Room Den Makeover inspired by Elvis' Jungle Room: They kept the paneling and it actually looks really good with the black trim! | Zebra Print Rug | Malachite Side Table | Black Leather Chesterfield couch | Fur Throw

    Fur Throw / Malachite Table

The malachite table was my birthday gift from my dad. He did good, right? He may or may not have gotten an email with the exact link to what I wanted. 😉

The Jungle Room Den Makeover inspired by Elvis' Jungle Room: They kept the paneling and it actually looks really good with the black trim! | Vintage Black Pleather Chair | Fur Throw

Down from the couch is the vintage black chair we had in our previous living room. Yes, I cheated and threw the fur throw on it for photos. #sorrynotsorry It just looks so good on both the couch and the chair.

The Jungle Room Den Makeover inspired by Elvis' Jungle Room: They kept the paneling and it actually looks really good with the black trim! | Old Radio turned Bar | Vintage Black Pleather Chair | Fur Throw

Radio turned Bar / Green Lamp / Giraffe Tray / Cow Print

Opposite the fireplace is the vintage radio turned bar. Once more, not 100% sure about the blue in this space, but it works for now. The cow art used to be in our bedroom and the lamp used to be in Bill’s room, but neither was needed in those spaces this time around so the den took custody of them.

The Jungle Room Den Makeover inspired by Elvis' Jungle Room: They kept the paneling and it actually looks really good with the black trim! | Zebra Print Rug | Malachite Side Table | Black Leather Chesterfield couch

    Rug

The big statement piece in the room that really lets you know this is the jungle room is the rug. It’s the Waitsfield Zebra rug from American Rug Craftsmen. The rug is bold in pattern, but thick and plush in comfort. It gives a cozy feel to the space when you walk across it. The Circus has already claimed it as one of her favorite places to play on the floor. It’s got stain protection built into it as well, which we all know is good for the Circus.

Alright, what do you guys think of the Jungle Room Den Makeover?

I can’t wait to hear your thoughts – good or bad! ha!
