Spray Painted Lamp Makeover

Remember that fabulous coral and green striped table I showed you the other day?

This lamp was its mate.

It was on top of the table at the yard sale.

The lamp was actually overhauled before the table. I think when the table saw how fabulous the lamp was, it decided it should be just as fabulous, if not more.

Have any of you called the asylum yet to come pick up the crazy lady who says her furniture has thoughts and feelings?

One of you should probably get on that. I’ll start packing.

Anywho, when I first brought the lamp home, I initially thought I would give it a coat of Rub ‘N Buff.

Yea, that wasn’t working out too well.

Plan B: Enter aqua spray paint.

Yep, I like that. I gave the lamp two coats of the aqua spray paint and a couple top coats of Rust-Oleum’s Gloss Topcoat to shine it up.

I was stressing over what what kind of shade to put on it. I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on a shade for a lamp that I had purchased at a yard sale and planned to re-sell. As I was scouring my craft room, I came across a shade with birds on it that had once been in my living room. I thought, “That will never work, but I’ll try it anyway.” And much to my surprise, it looked great on the lamp.

Your lamp is just too cute! If I could, I’d take it home with me! (It matches a bird wall decal mural that I have in my home’s master bedroom.) I love the aqua color and the adorable bird motif. Perfect!

Two things I love in decor – aqua and birds! Very cute! And I think the color combo’s great, too! Had you chosen red or yellow it would have felt so “autumn”…but the aqua gave it life! 🙂

Jenna, it shocked me how well the lamp and shade fit together, but I do love it! I am lamp crazy and was so proud when I learned how to re-wire them. One question for you, can you see the switch if you are across the room? I like for the mechanical (?) parts to be hidden by the shade. There’s always a hot glue gun around for some reason!:)

I’m a newbie who would like to do more DIY decorating, because I think its fun/satisfying, and I don’t have the money to buy everything new. So here’s my first question: Do you spraypaint on newspaper or an old sheet? or what? And do you recommend spray paint right from the can, or renting a sprayer?

    • Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says

I typically spray paint on an old Rubbermaid tote lid. I would not recommend newspaper because the paint will make it stick to whatever you are painting. I think an old sheet may work ok. I have a paint sprayer that I love, but I also use spray paint.
