In case you didn’t know, I’m not an art connoisseur.
Now a cheap beer connoisseur, I am.
Ok, really just Miller High Life.
Here’s how I decide what art to hang on my walls:
I browse online and/or thrift stores.
Ooooo, I like it.
Look at the price tag.
Ooooo, its cheap.
Buy it.
Ooooo, its expensive.
Leave it.
Pretty straightforward, no?
While there may never be a priceless hand painted original piece of art hanging in my home, excluding the circus’ art, these pieces either already reside here or will at some point.
Because they’re pretty.
And cheap.
And nothing beats pretty and cheap together.
Best Sources for Affordable Wall Art & Favorites Under $50

1. Etsy
Abstract / Tallulah Shaw / To The Night / Gemstones
Etsy should probably be a given for anyone. Its packed with hundreds and hundreds of talented artists who thankfully sell their prints at affordable prices. Not only can you find actual prints, but you can find loads of printables to use as wall art for usually $5 or less. I don’t have that glorious abstract in my house yet, but you’d better believe I will soon. I love the colors. Tallulah Shaw is from the Janet Hill Studio. I love every single one of her pieces, but can’t choose just one or find the perfect place for it yet. The bottom two are both hanging on the black and white gallery wall in my living room.
2. Kirkland’s
Ahh, Kirkland’s. I could sing of your glorious home decor deals for days. Not only can you snag super cheap and pretty accessories at Kirkland’s, but its also a great place for snagging wall art at an amazing price – like this big Buffalo Canvas for $25. Twenty-five freakin’ dollars.
3. Society6
Cow Watercolor / Lips Watercolor / Banana Leaves / Donkey
I just discovered Society6 when I started working on my gallery wall (I know- I was living under a rock), but its one of my new favorite places for art. Its a marketplace full of individual artists. You can buy their prints at great prices, but you can also get most of those prints on pillows, totes, and just about anything else you can dream up. I’m not kidding. Every print above, excluding the cow, is on my gallery wall. The cow will be someplace soon though. And a few family members may even get one for Christmas presents.
4. Furbish Studio
Ginger Jar / Everyone’s a Dumb Whore / Neon Headdress
Ahhh, Furbish. You are like my go-to place for random colorfulness. I mean really, who wouldn’t want that dumb whore cross-stitch hanging in their office. And also, who thinks to cross-stitch dumb whore into something?! Genius, I say, genius! And a neon headdress? A NEON HEADDRESS.
5. Waiting on Martha
And then there’s Waiting on Martha. She’s full of a little bit of everything – wall art, yes, but also barware, bedroom decor and more. Have you ever seen a more precious lion?
And my favorite source for frames…Target.
Room Essentials White Wood Frame
This simple white frame is my go-to for any style of art. This frame is the kind I used all around my gallery wall. It comes with a white mat and works great to highlight even the smallest pieces of art. If you aren’t into white, you can always spray paint it a different color. I opted to leave them all white for my gallery wall though.
Ok, spill the beans. What are your go-to art sources and faves? You know, we don’t keep secrets around here.

On my walls…original oil paintings, original watercolor paintings, original pen and ink drawings, pictures taken by my husband and myself and quilted wall hangings. Does that mean I’m boring or lucky to know artists back in the day when they were selling their pieces for $125 or less??? I also love to paint with oils and I’m a quilter…so my house reflects that.
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
That means you are LUCKY, girl!!! The rest of us are jealous of your original pieces!
Dad says
Jenna, since you are plugging inexpensive artwork that looks good on any wall let me recommend to your readers who have family members who are avid motorcyclists a place in Lexington, AL (extreme north AL, across state line from Loretto, TN) of some beautifully themed biker art. Something from here might make a great Christmas or birthday gift for that special biker. Check them out sometime.

Hi Dad,
Well I want some biker art, can you tell us where the biker art is? Do they ship? thanks . [email protected]

I recently bought a 16×16 of a pug dog, done just like the cow above, on stretched canvas for $23 on sale from World Market. They had other canvas pieces and framed wall art on sale for the same price or less, I had to stop. I shopped online but my total, because of being a rewards member, had free shipping. I know I’ll be buying more.
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Whoa! That is an awesome deal, Mary!

Hi Jenna, I’ve been meaning to ask, while on the subject of wall things, do you have a source for reasonably priced, i.e. cheap enough, sconce lighting? I’d like two over my bed so that I can use the nightstands for other items. I don’t mind paintable or metal strips to hide the electrical cords, no need to hardwire. I like the lights that flank your LR TV on your gallery wall but I’d probably want brushed nickel or chrome. Thank you! 🙂
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Those sconces on my living room wall might actually be a great solution. They are from Home Depot and were only $50 each. I actually painted them gold – they come in Brushed Nickel. 🙂

I buy a lot of my art from Goodwill/thrift stores. Yes it requires hunting but I have several framed original oils and water colours, not to mention some awesome vintage posters that have come home with me this way – all for less than $20, most for less than $10. Most often the only thing they need is a frame update – most of the time I can tape off the glass and use a quick trusty can of spray paint to modernise it. Soon that frame goes from drab to fab 😛
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
That’s awesome, Heili! I always looks for art in Goodwill and thrift stores, but have never found anything. Lucky you!

This is a great art source list! I usually get my art form the thrift store and as of recently, society 6. I do not really buy art from big box stores as they are a bit too generic for my taste.
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
I’m not too much of a big box art store either, Jessica. Society6 is one of my favorites!
