How to Make a Lamp Out of a Bottle
Seen a few bottle lamps around that you love, but not the price tag? Learn how to make a lamp out of a bottle yourself! It’s actually pretty easy!
I’m sure you’ve seen many bottle lamps around. Aren’t they gorgeous? I just love them. However, they tend to have a high price tag. Luckily though, I’m going to show you how to make a bottle lamp yourself.
DIY Bottle Lamp

Making a lamp from a bottle is actually pretty easy!

Materials Needed:

  • Bottle of Your Choice
  • Bottle Lamp Kit
  • Lamp Harp (If you’re doing a lampshade on the bottle lamp.)

Steps

Step 1

Get your stuff together. Remember that awesome old wine bottle I bought at the Insyde Outsyde shop back in September?

DIY Bottle Lamp
Pottery Barn sells these bottles for a ridiculous amount of $$$, but luckily I found a great deal on one. I decided to turn it into a lamp!
Step 2
Follow the instructions on the bottle lamp kit.
Turn a bottle into a lamp.
The lamp kit is way easy to do. You’ll select the best size plug to go into your bottle top. An Xacto knife may be helpful to trim the plug if it’s a little too big. You’d rather it be too big than too small though.
Once you find the correct size plug, you’ll attach the socket and wire as the directions say.

I also ran a bead of super glue around where the plug goes into the bottle to keep it nice and securely in there.
Step 3
Top it with a shade!
I had a lampshade I’d found at a thrift store that I covered with burlap to work nicely with my lamp. I also added a ribbon detail along the edge.

Finally, I had my very own DIY bottle lamp.

This is gorgeous. It reminds me of ones I’ve seen in PB or Crate & Barrel. I love the color of the bottle and the shade is beautiful. I’m visiting from TT & J.

That is such a wonderful idea. Now I know what to do with the large wine bottle I would at a store in Va beach. Thank you for sharing. So the wire for the lamp does it go on the outside. I don’t recall reading about drilling a hole. Pining this to my to do list.

Vidya, thanks for stopping by! This is super easy to do! Yes, the wire stays on the outside. It just hangs down form the back. Once you buy the kit, you will see.

Hi Kim! I didn’t have to make any holes in the bottle – I used the opening at the top that was already there.

Great job! I would really like to know how you fastened the *item I don’t have the English word for but is where one puts the bulb* to the bottle neck.

Hi Charlotte! There is a rubber stopper type thing (for lack of better word) that you just pop into the bottle neck. You have to squeeze it in. I did add a ring of super glue around mine once it was in the bottle. Hope that helps!

Did you drill a hole in the bottle for the lamp cord?

This lamp is fantastic!!! You do make it look very easy. I think the only thing I would do different with the wire inside the lamp, would be to wrap it in sisal. The shade looks “burlappy”….if that is a word….and the sisal would be a good compliment to the shade.
