I am not a tablescape person.
To be blunt, I suck at them.
It’s just too much thinking – there are too many things that have to be on a set table for me to also figure out what to use as a centerpiece, place cards, etc.
Now, doing one of those things solo without having to think of all the other jazz – I’m good.
Like last year – I had really cute, or really cute in my opinion anyway, also cheap, little painted pumpkins that doubled as place card holders.
And this year, I’m rocking one single element of the tablescape – the napkin and napkin ring.
Now, just let me say this is not too frou-frou. I’m not a frou-frou person and frou-frou just stresses me out. So if you were expecting a perfectly color coordinated full place setting to go along with that napkin and ring, I’m not your girl.
However, if you want pretty stone embellished napkin rings (done in under 10 minutes), then I’m totally your girl. 😉
Also, coincidentally, I managed to color coordinate these napkin rings and napkins in Grunt Labor’s fraternity colors – purple and green. He was very proud.
I didn’t tell him it was 100% unplanned.
Materials:
-
- Various Colored Stones (use any color and sizes you would like, although you don’t want them to get too big.)
-
- Pretty Napkin Rings (Mine came from Birch Lane)
Step 1:
If your stones are a bit dirty (mine were), rinse them off well and let them dry. After they are dry, give each stone you intend to use three light coats of the clear gloss spray paint. This is going to make them more shiny and polished, rather than looking like you just pulled them outta the dirt. Let the stones fully dry.
Step 2:
Tear off a piece of painter’s tape that could wrap around the napkin ring several times and set aside. Place a small amount of E6000 Glue on the flattest side of each stone, then place the stone on top of the napkin ring. While holding the stone in place on the ring, wrap the painter’s tape around the top of the stone and around the ring to keep it in place while the rings dry.
Place the rings in a box with paper towels smushed between them to keep them upright or in a bowl of rice or beans. Don’t worry – the rings don’t fall over when they are on a napkin – I just needed something to keep the rings from falling down against each other while drying. Let them dry for a full 24 hours before using them.
In an unexpected twist, I opted for plum colored napkins to go with the napkin rings. I have to say – I’m really digging my signature green with the plum…
Maybe those fraternity colors aren’t too bad…
What do you think of the combo?

They are absolutely beautiful! A word of caution, though…that is glass, not stone. There is a decent chance that if it takes a good tumble, it will shatter or chip and you’ll have some sharp edges.
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Thanks, Marcia! Ok, you just confirmed what I thought – I thought it was glass from the beginning but the container I bought them in said stone and I was like, well, maybe I’m just crazy! Good to know, I wasn’t!
