I’m partial to lions.
I find it hard to walk away from just about anything lion decor related.
I have good reason for this though.
Grunt Labor and I met while we were both teachers. Our school’s mascot was the lion. Grunt Labor has always coached the lions. The Circus knew how to say “Go Lions!” before she left the womb. She had her one year old pictures taken on the lion paw prints surrounding that same school’s football field. Bill played for the lions.
So I’m partial to lions.
I have wanted a lion statue to go outside of our front door longer than I can remember. However, finding a good sized lion statue for a reasonable price was not as easy as I thought it would be. I had kind of quit looking.
But it was when I quit looking that I found my perfect lion.
I was in At Home a few weeks ago for no particular reason other than to take a much needed break from the renovation at the 70’s Landing Pad. It was then, while wandering through the endless Outdoor Decor Collections aisles, that I found my lion. He was white, of good size, and only $30. I could hardly contain my excitement and having no one else with me to celebrate with, I pulled that lion right off the shelf and gave him a hug. Given that I’d been searching for him for years, I felt this was completely reasonable.
Once I found my lion, my trip to At Home suddenly became a quest to whip the front door entry into shape at the 70’s Landing Pad.
I decided the lion would go on one side of the front door, but I would need something of similar size to the lion to even out the other side of the door.
I went through shelves full of At Home Patio and Outdoor Entertaining items and tried out no less than 15 different plant stands, garden stools and small tables right there in the store. I’m sure people hate to turn down the aisles I’m on, because I tend to take up half of it testing out what works together and what doesn’t.
After I found a garden stool that worked, I then did the same thing with flower pots.
And before I left, I figured I might as well get a new door mat while I’m at it.
Here’s what the front door space looked like before:
Now friends, you know I love me some green. But that shade of green with those bricks just wasn’t doing it for me. And so to really make my new lion feel at home and shine, I painted the front door and trim for him.
I went for a wine colored front door and opted for black trim because we have a lot of black in the house and that seemed to tie in well with the brick color and the front door color as well.
Of course, Mr. Lion is taking up residence on one side of the door. By the way, he also has a solar light built into him – that’s what the light and black thing are on his base! The new doormat also brought some of the black down to the porch floor.
On the other side of the door is a black and white planter on top of a garden stool I finally settled on at At Home to give it a bit more height and even out each side of the door.
I think Mr. Lion likes his new home – especially when the Circus makes him a crown out of rocks.

Nosy person wants to know (me) What lights up on the lion? And you’re right — the green door just wasn’t doing anything for the house. Looks great!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
It has a small solar piece and a little light on the base of the lion, Marisa!

AWESOME! Sometimes when you least expect it what you’re looking for all of a sudden turns up! And what GLEE when you find it! Way to go!!

I know, right?! I was shocked and SO excited all at the same time!!

Dang, but I wish we had an At Home near us! What a great buy and the porch looks fantastic!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Oh boo, sorry you don’t, Maggie! I know they do have some of their items online.
Randi says
Loving the new front door color! And the lion looks quite at home there.
Have a lovely day!

Thanks, Randi! Hope you have a great day as well!

Love your Lion, love the expression on his face not quite majestic, but he is working on it,like he is not taking himself to serious, too cute. Love how your front entry turned out, the colors are perfect and it really makes your lion stand out. When your flowers mature in the planter it will be gorgeous, elevating it on the garden stool looks so pretty. I really wish we had an At Home Store near us maybe one day. I thought it ironic you went there to get away from renovations for a few hours, but created more haha, but it turned out great.

I know, right?! As I was checking out, that’s exactly what I thought to myself as well, Patty! So much for a breather for me!

GO! If it’s anything like mine, you won’t be disappointed!

I love, love, love your lion. I enjoy all of your posts, but my favorite part is when you say, “Be a freak.” lol
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
I just like to make sure everyone around here gets their daily reminder, Carol! 😉

How fun! Love the makeover! And I love how the lion is sentimental for your family. Great find!

Thanks, Erin!

Great change…very welcoming.
I am a little surprised that you don’t have “remove the door and sidelights” and “replace with double French doors.”
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Oh honey – that is on the list, but the budget couldn’t handle that kind of shock right now!
MJ says
So glad to see that green gone. But now women all over will be looking for ceramic lions! Going to be some trouble on aisle 5–or whichever……LOL
Does he have a name yet??????
Cheers, MJ
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
hahaha!!! I don’t know if he does have a name yet, MJ! I’ll have to ask the circus. I’m somehow sure she has something in mind…. haha!

Jenna, I love what you’ve done with the front door. It looks wonderful! My problem is the poor fellow looks very pale and lost! Can you bring out his form with some depth his fur? His beautiful shape needs to show up more. I’m not trying to be critical. When I first saw Leo he looked really special. When I saw the first picture of the completed front, he looks lost in white. Give him some definition! love Anne
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Hey Anne! With that first picture of the whole front door area, he did look really white – the sun was working against me on that one!
Amy Anderson says
I like lions too! I’d definitely display on my front porch 😀
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Awesome, Amy!
Brigitte says
Serendipity! I really like Mr. Lion, he’s perfect!!! 🙂
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Thanks, Brigitte! Me too! He’s officially one of my favorite finds of all time!
