Nearly broken your neck or a limb before because a rug slid right out from under you? My hand is raised over here! When a heavy piece of furniture is on your rugs, then you’re in good shape. Runners through your hallway though, kitchen rugs, rugs in your entryway – those are the ones that can be a pain to keep in place. I have found the solution though for how to keep rugs from sliding on hardwood floors, tile floors, linoleum and other hard surfaces. Read on to see how easy it is!

I switched out the rugs in my dining room a while back. I had Grunt Labor and Nicky move one we had downstairs upstairs under the dining room table. I could have done this myself, but when you have free labor around, you should take advantage of it, no?
Both Grunt Labor and Nicky said, this rug is too light (in terms of weight), it’s going to slide around up here on the hardwood. I said they were wrong. The table would keep it in place.
Well, I realized I was the wrong one after about 10 minutes of having the rug in place.
Yes, those words did just taste like vinegar.
The table kept the rug in place where the four legs stood, but other than that, when you took one step on it, the rug went another way.
We put a rug pad under it which helped some, but not completely.
Now, let’s fast forward to my office at the 70’s Landing Pad.
This is one of two rooms in the whole house that didn’t get new floors. It already had the hardwood and while the finish is coming off right in the middle (you can see around the edges of the rug where the finish is wearing away), I just couldn’t justify the money to refinish the floors (it was going to be $500 just for this small space) when it was just that one area. So, I opted to cover most of it with a snazzy leopard print rug I found at a yard sale for $2.
The problem: The rug was sliding all around the room like the floor was it’s own personal slip n’ slide.
And that’s when I heard about RugLock.
RugLock actually tweeted me and said they were in the Chattanooga area too, told me about their product and ask if I wanted to try it out. Yep, I have the perfect place to do just that.
RugLock is a spray that creates a permanent non-slip rug backing which grips to your floor.
Here’s how to use it…
How to Keep Rugs From Slipping
You’ll Need:
- RugLock
- Painter’s Tape
- Drop cloth
You can buy RugLock by itself or purchase it with a kit which includes the painter’s tape and drop cloth for $5 more. You can find it on RugLock’s site or on Amazon.
Step 1:
Lay out your drop cloth and place your rug upside down on the drop cloth.
If there’s any dirt or junk on the bottom of the rug, clean that off. A lint roller works well for that.
Step 2:
Run painter’s tape along the edges of the rug to protect the banding or any fringe the rug may have.
Step 3:
Shake the can of RugLock, hold it at knee height and spray it back and forth working your way down the rug.
It should look like snow falling on the rug.
Cover the entire rug with RugLock and let it dry for 8-12 hours.
Step 4:
I let my rug dry overnight, then came back and removed the tape. The back side of the rug will be tacky. This is how it’s supposed to feel. Place your rug where you want it and lock it in place by applying pressure to it.
I walked all around on mine. Yes, I know I have sexy supermodel legs. 😉
You can move the rug at any time. If any of the RugLock sticks to the floor, it can be rubbed off by hand or with a damp cloth. If the rug starts to slide over time, just flip it over and wipe down the backing with a damp cloth, let it dry and the tackiness will return.
Now obviously it’s hard to tell that the rug is really locked into place with just pictures. So I made a quick little video of me pulling, jumping, etc. on the rug. I had to hold the phone myself because no one is ever around to video this stuff for me.
I was seriously impressed by this stuff and can’t wait to try it out on a couple other rugs. So far, this has been the best way I’ve found to keep a rug in place.
RugLock will most likely work best to keep rugs from sliding on hardwood floors, tile floors, laminate floors and linoleum flooring. Since the spray on backing is tacky, I wouldn’t recommend it for carpet.
You can find RugLock here and on Amazon.

What a neat concept! Does this RugLock work on carpeted areas also?
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
It is neat, Sharon! I’m not sure about the carpeted areas, but I’ll find out!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Sharon, I just heard back from RugLock and they said YES, it does work on carpeted areas also!
Tracey A. says
I have a rug on the patio that just won’t stay in place. It is on the concrete. I have had to get rid of rugs because I didn’t have this NIFTY product! Wish I knew of it then!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
I should have mentioned, outdoors is the one place you can’t use it. If it freezes in winter, it can be very slippery and dangerous. Sorry, Tracey!
Lisa Mannion says
I would love to try this with my kitchen rugs. What a great concept. Thank for sharing. LOVE your blog.
Lisa Brown says

What a great idea. I have a floor mat that always moves around no matter what pad I put under it. I didn’t want to buy really heavy rug as it is in my mud room and sometimes needs a thorough wash in the machine. This co solve the problem.
Jill Butler says
I have a hallway rug that is always in a heap from my 2 dogs chasing each other. Nothing I’ve ever tried has worked so I look forward to trying out Rug Lock!
Pat says
Love this! It must be safe for the hardwood, right?
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Yep, totally is, Pat. If any of the spray on backing comes off on the hardwood, it comes right off by just rubbing it with your finger or a damp cloth.
Glenda B. says
I really need this on the rugs in front of my sink & stove in the kitchen. If I’m in a hurry cooking & hit one of those rugs to fast I fly across the kitchen then I usually wind up on the floor on my behind. So I really need to win this, lol. Thank you for the giveaway. Have a fabulous day!!!!!

mary ballerin says
Girl, I wish I could find a rug like that for $2! You find some great sales/deals. I just ordered a rug pad that was delivered yesterday but I could really use this for area rugs over carpeting in my bedroom, they will NOT stay in place, even with pads. Thanks!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
That rug was pure luck!!! I found it at a yard sale along with this mid-century modern chair that was chrome but covered in rust. I got the chair for $2 or $3. They had no clue what they had. I cleaned it up and found out the chair was worth a couple hundred!
mary ballerin says
Score! Like my $40 Heywood-Wakefield bureau in the rarer platinum finish and my $40 Dixie campaigner armoire – the first was almost perfect, the second needs a little work but, but $2 and $3 – I’m jelly. 😉 Good for you! I’m always on the lookout in FB groups for peeps who don’t know mcm. Too much of a night owl to go to garage sales when they open, born to sleep late in the morning – song lyrics? Have a Happy Mother’s Day, Jenna, and Mama too!

Thanks, Mary!!
Stephanie Phelps says
I have a rug in my childs room that needs to be locked so this and awesome way to do it!
Dana says
I love your blog too, because your sense of humor makes me laugh every time! This looks like a great product, and I have one question about it: can it be used on washable scatter rugs, and will it survive being washed?
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
This is what they said Dana “While RugLock has survived some washings on delicate/cold settings, it’s not a guarantee so we don’t advise it. Any rug cleaning solution they prefer would be the safest option for cleaning a rug with RugLock on it.” Hope that helps! 🙂
Heather S says
The rug under my bed! 🙂
Fara says
This is so cool! I’d love to have a rug in our dining room, but thinking about dealing with flappy corners makes me ragey. If it would stay in place, I’d do a happy dance!

Can this product be used on washable rugs? Will it survive washing?

Hi Dana! I asked RugLock your question and this was their response: “While RugLock has survived some washings on delicate/cold settings, it’s not a guarantee so we don’t advise it. Any rug cleaning solution they prefer would be the safest option for cleaning a rug with RugLock on it.”

Susan the Farm Quilter says
I have three runners in my bedroom that never want to stay put!! I swear the hardwood is an ice skating rink for them!! Thanks for the chance to win, Jenna!
Susan the Farm Quilter says
Oh, does it only work on rugs? I would love to keep my sewing machine pedal from sliding away from me…nothing else seems to work! I know it would keep my little mat in front of my stove from disappearing under the stove!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Hey Susan! I asked RugLock your question and this is their response: “RugLock does work on a variety of other projects! We’ve heard of people successfully using it on car mats, table mats and runners, and pet beds. I have not tried it on a sewing pedal, but that sounds like a great idea! It really all depends if the adhesive can adhere to the back of the pedal, but so far, I’ve seen it hold to most surfaces. I would just let it dry for at least 8 hours and test it out beforehand to make sure it’s dry, but tacky (not wet). If so, then it should work. Also let her know to email us or comment on our website or Facebook page because we’d love to hear how that goes!”

I rent. My daughter and I both have mobility issues -I am a senior and my daughter is special need. It is so dangerous as our rugs just slide all over the place. We have floor that looks like tile, but feels like cement. She has fallen once and had a two inch gash in her forehead. I have tried EVERYTHING that has been suggested and it has not worked. I am willing to try this product, but I want to make sure I understand. This will not harm the floor, correct? When the time comes and I take up the rugs, I just wipe it down and then perhaps mop? Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Jenna says
Exactly what you said, Lucy. When you take it up, just wipe excess away and mop. You could also start out by just applying the spray on the corners of the rugs. If that doesn’t keep them in place, then you could go back and cover the whole rug back.
Janice Shugert says
Would this work on braided rugs and rug that have lost their backing? When you wash these rugs does the spray come off?
