I’m still learning the ropes of my Silhouette, so no judging how simple or elementary this project is.
But, aren’t fabulous simple projects what you love?
I do.
And I think that my horse silhouette pillow is pretty fabulous. And simple.

And if you don’t have a Silhouette, I’m pretty sure you could easily make this project without one.
So, first, you are gonna need a pillow. I made my pillow out of leftover fabric I had from the new navy and white striped curtains you may have noticed in my kitchen tour. The fabric came from Ikea and it was a whopping $2 a yard. Needless to say, I came back with more navy and white striped fabric than I can ever use. They will probably cover my coffin in it. You could always use an existing pillow you have or grab a pillow cover from Hobby Lobby. Whatever floats your boat.
I just did a simple small rectangle pillow that was 17 inches x 10 inches before sewing it together.
I purchased the horse shape from the online Silhouette store. Did you really think I could draw that horse myself with my elementary skills? I know there is some trace feature, but I haven’t conquered that one either.
I played with the size of the horses and cut them out on printer paper unil I had the right size.
The right size for the horse turned out to be about 6 x 7.5.
I cut out my horse on felt. Learn from my mistakes, DO NOT buy the felt that already has a sticky back. It will not work. Just buy the plain old $0.50 a piece felt at Hobby Lobby. Once I did have the right felt, I made my settings as follows, which seemed to work ok for me.
This is what the felt looked like when it came out of the Silhouette.
There were places where it didn’t go all the way through. I’m sure if I had a separate fabric blade, it would have cut more, but it was easily fixed with a pair of scissors.
After I cut out the horse, I adhered it to the pillow with hot glue.
It is definitely improving the look of my ugly brown couch.
What do you think? Too simple for you? haha!

These pumpkin place card holders also used my Silhouette.
And I made this fun and colorful party banner with it too!

Not too simple at all! I admit that I tend to dive in head first, but part of the reason I can do that is because there are people like you who tackle the simple projects, so I learn from all of you! Thanks for sharing your felt cutting tips and settings! 🙂
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Thank you, Kristy!
Kirsten @ One Tough Mother says
I love this! The colors, the design…perfect! My daughter is obsessed with horses – I’ll have to make one of these for her!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Thanks, Kirsten! It was so easy to make!
Shaffer Sisters says
Wow this is neat. I’ve tried cutting felt on my Silhouette before but it always sounds so bad when it’s doing it. Plus I’m always worried about ruining my mat. My only question is what did your mat look like when you were done and how did your machine handle the job?
Thanks for your responses.
Al @ Shaffer Sisters
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
My mat didn’t look bad, Al! However, it wasn’t exactly the cleanest thing before it went in either. That’s weird that your machine made a weird sound. Mine didn’t. Hmmmm….. I did have to use the scissors some in the end though.
Jessica says
Cute! I love the navy and green and I LOVE felt! 🙂
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Thanks, Jessica! Me too!
Randi Sowders says
So cute!!!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Thanks, Randi!
Carrie @ My Favorite Finds says
I love it! I haven’t cut any sort of fabric with my Silhouette yet, but now I’m encouraged to try!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Thanks, Carrie! Go for it!
Lauren @ The Thinking Closet says
I did a felt pillow project, too, recently, though I won’t be sharing that post until later in the month. (And mine involved a fish, not a horse…and I wasn’t brave enough to try cutting it out with my Silhouette…but your tute makes me think I should have tried!)
Love that I could pretty much recognize one of your projects without any watermarks or text on the picture, just by color scheme alone! I mean, this pillow matches your blog design to a T! (It’s almost like these are your favorite colors or something.)
It brings me so much joy to see you using your Silhouette so very much. And tackling brave projects, too! High five.
Thanks for participating in this month’s Silhouette Challenge and for inspiring us with your creativity!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
I know, you would think my house is just covered with these colors, right, Lauren? hahaha! And yep, you can cut felt with the Silhouette. However, I do think if I had a separate blade that I used just for fabric, it would have cut it more and I wouldn’t have had to use the scissors as much!
Rachel @ Architecture of a Mom says
I was wondering if I could cut felt with my Silhouette! You have totally inspired me to grab some felt. Did you use the fabric blade, or the regular one? Thanks!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
I used my regular blade, Rachel. However, I think if I would have had a separate blade that I used for just fabric, I think it may have cut it more so that I wouldn’t have had to use scissors as much!
Lynne Fenbert Neumann says
I just adore horses, and horse motifs. I like this idea a lot. Thanks for sharing.
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
You and me both, Lynne! I love horses and really all animal motifs!
Valerie says
That is very cute, and definitely not too simple. I’ve never tried cutting felt with my silhouette because I thought I need to buy interfacing before I could do that. So your “simple” post actually taught me something I think is a little advanced. Thanks!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Thanks, Valerie! Nope, I didn’t buy interfacing, just cut the felt as is!
Glenna Anderson says
Cute pillow! I’ve often wondered if we could cut felt. Thanks for sharing.
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Thanks, Glenna! Yep, you can, you just may have to cut it out a little more with scissors!
Selene Galindo says
How unique! I could totally see this pillow in one of those one of a kind home decor stores!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Oh, Selene! You are way too nice! But, thank you though!
Erin @ DIY on the Cheap says
Very cute! I really need to get a Silhouette! I’ve seen so many cute projects that I want to make.
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
I totally would not have a Silhouette Erin, if I hadn’t won it. They are just really expensive, but very handy!
Emily @ Two Purple Couches says
Love this! I adore a bit of equestrian flair 🙂
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Thanks, Emily! I adore it as well, but I find my adoration turning into an obsession and that could be bad…..
Trisha D. says
Finally having a chance to go through all the Silhouette Challenge project inspiration– I’m like a [big] kid on Christmas but earlier!!
Bahaha covering your coffin in fabric, maybe they could line it too?
Seriously though, with Silhouette, the possibilities are endless!! I can’t seem to get your bold color combo out of my head, Navy, Emerald and a pearly white- WOW!! Don’t get me started on your horse silhouette, there may or may not have been a puddle of drool on my desk.
Keep rockin on!!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Lining my coffin in the navy and white fabric is genius, Trisha! I have a serious animal lust going on right now and am having trouble not adding animal silhouettes or decor to every space in my house!
Erica @ Spoonful of Imagination says
It looks amazing! I have done one of these horse silhouette…but cut mine out. Using your machine with felt is genius! I love it! Haha can never have too much navy and white fabric either, right!? XO, Erica
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Never enough navy and white, Erica! Never!
Brooke says
Definitely a learning curve when it comes to learning the Silhouette, but you learn as you go. I cut pieces out of flannel last year for my nieces and nephews’ pajama shirts and I had to cut them like 3 times double cut each time and I still had to trim with scissors. I’ve never tried again!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Yep, Brooke, I still had to cut mine out with scissors too. I do need to try to cut it more than once next time!
Jamie says
Love this! I gotta make one {and get myself a Silhouette!} for my daughter’s equestrian bday!
Hugs,
Jamie
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Yes, you do!!! Or I can make them and send them to you!
Lindsey @ Redhead Baby Mama says
cute! I could make a bulldog pillow with that same technique, and my husband would love it! Now, if only I had a silhouette! 🙂
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
Oh, a bulldog pillow would look fabulous, Lindsey!
Heather @ Southern State of Mind says
Love that fabric from Ikea. I could drape myself in that stuff. Love the silhouette! You are on your way to rocking that machine!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
I could too, Heather! Love it! Hopefully, I will really rock it out before its all said and done!
Mellisa Carmody says
I just got a Silhouette Cameo and love your idea. It turned out so cute and thanks for the cutting settings for felt! Very helpful!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
You are welcome, Melissa! And thank you! I just got my Silhouette recently too, so I am still learning lots about it!
lynnof5cats says
Thank you so, so much for giving the right settings to cut felt! Everywhere else I looked said I had to use interfacing, which wouldn’t have done my dolls any favors. I just put the felt right on the sticky mat, it actually made less mess than paper has been. And I did have to use the scissors quite a bit, but it was still a lot less – and a lot more accurate! – than if I’d been cutting all the parts manually!
Jenna @ Rain on a Tin Roof says
You are welcome! I am thrilled that it was so helpful! I had to use scissors a lot as well, but like you said it was better than tracing and cutting by hand!!
