A Simple Christmas at the Farm

Hi there! If you’re new here, hopping over from Laura at The Turquoise Home, welcome! I’m thrilled you’re here! Wasn’t Laura’s house a treat? She has a beautiful home, but she’s also such a sweet soul. I hope you enjoy my holiday tour today as well!

    Simplicity.

Such an elusive word sometimes, right? When my uncle (the farmer) is debating over buying new equipment or fixing something, I always ask him if it’s going to make life more simple. Usually, the answer is yes and I follow that up with, “Why are we waiting then?”

I’ve come to realize I need to take my own advice more often.

This year, I was itching to dress the knotty pine clad den at the farm up for the holidays. It’s my favorite room in the whole entire world.

And while I had no particular ideas in general for this space, the room itself knew exactly where to go…and it also knew I needed to keep things simple.

So I let it lead me.

I think things just tend to work out better that way.

    Flocked Christmas Tree

And if my Pap were still sitting in this room watching Gunsmoke, while he’d shake his head and laugh at his Stetson used as the tree topper, he’d still appreciate the holiday nod to the cowboys.

    Flocked Christmas Tree

And while doing a themed tree never would have crossed my Grannie’s mind, her guitar was the inspiration so I think she’d approve.

While I decorated, I listened to good country music and danced a jig or two around the room just like Grannie and I used to do together.

    Guitar Ornaments

The tree didn’t get even get lights. All it needed were a few simple ornaments to make it special.

There was no rhyme or reason, but I even pulled out her old typewriter for the season. The spirit just moved me. And I listened because that’s what you do when the spirit talks.

And of course, it worked out perfectly as an anchor for the vintage Christmas cards.

    Because this room just knew…

…like it’s always known exactly what I needed and when to wrap me up with its sweet memories.

Up next on the Seasonal Simplicity Christmas tours is Stacy Risenmay – you won’t want to miss her!

  • Hassle Free Cleaning

    Hassle Free Cleaning

This post is sponsored by Swiffer. All opinions are 100% mine.

Every farmhouse should be equipped with a muddy boots and clothes drop zone-washroom.

By farmhouse, I mean actual houses on farms, not farmhouse style houses in the middle of the city. Y’all know how I feel about that term being used in the design world these days.

Said drop zone-washroom should be the first room you enter immediately after coming in from the muddy field. If one is muddy, they should not be permitted to pass the washroom until they have stripped off all their muddy boots, clothes, etc. It’s also preferable to have a shower, deep sink, washer and dryer in this space. And for the love of God, no shiplap. 😉

You see, this is what happens when actual farmhouses don’t have one of these spaces…

    Mud. Everywhere.

Our farmhouse floors get as dirty in one weekend as the average person’s floors over the course of a month.

If you’ve ever done farm work, then you also know that there is little downtime. We usually get there on Friday evening, work all day Saturday, often a good bit of Sunday and then it’s time to head back. There’s very little spare time to clean the house.

Luckily though, my Swiffer® WetJet Wood™ helps out. Cleaning up doesn’t take near as much time since I’m not lugging out a mop bucket, floor cleaner and mop.

After a quick sweep with my Swiffer ® Sweeper ™, all I have to do is pull out my WetJet Wood™, put on a new microfiber-like pad (super soft so no worries they’ll mess up the flooring!) and in less than 10 minutes, I’m done.

Swiffer® WetJet Wood™ is safe on finished wood surfaces, has an ultra fine mist spray + LED lights so you can see a little better in dark corners. My favorite aspect of this little baby though is that it has a quickdry solution. By the time, I’m done with all the floors, it’s already dry where I started. We aren’t having to wait forever for the floors to dry or hop and tiptoe over them.

Ain’t nobody on a farm got spare time to wait for floors to dry. There’s much bigger fish to fry, or should I say cattle to work? 😉

    Farm Birthday Party Ideas

Whoever said a farm birthday party couldn’t be stylish too? These farm themed birthday party ideas prove that a farm party can be both fun and filled with adorable and humorous party decorations.

When the Circus decided she wanted a farm theme party for her 6th birthday this year, I was totally on board, but I didn’t want it to be your typical farm theme party with everything black and white to reflect milk cows and hay all about. I wanted it to be colorful too – like her! I’m happy to say we successfully pulled off one full of personality, colorful farm themed birthday party!

Decoration Ideas for a Farm Party

These ideas are great for any gathering that is held on a farm or farm related in some way!

    Set the mood.

    Farm Birthday Party

Create an entrance to your party and set the mood with a “Welcome to the Farm!” sign. Use hay bales to hold it up if needed and embellish with balloons, bandannas and more!

    Keep the tables simple.

    Farm Birthday

There aren’t a whole lot of frills on a farm. Keep the table decorating simple by using red and white checkered tablecloths – a pattern that’s often seen on farms. Find the tablecloths here. This will also make for easy cleanup – these are just plastic, so after the party, just toss the soiled tablecloths in the trash!

    Affordable and Simple Flower Arrangements

    Farm Birthday Party Ideas

Mason jars are a staple around farms. Fill them with grocery store flower bouquets that you mix and match yourself. For these arrangements, I bought three different bouquets at the grocery store, then just mixed flowers from each bouquet into each mason jar.

    Barnyard Games

    Farm Party

Have a few barnyard games around for folks to play. This bean bag toss is fun for both kids and adults. It’s simply made from one sheet of plywood and a little spray paint.

    Farm Party Ideas

Another easy play activity to create for kids at farm themed parties are these “horses” made from square hay bales and stick horses. Just place the stick horse in the hay bale and let the kids ride!

Other barnyard games could include horseshoes, and pin the tail on the donkey.

Ideas for a Farm Birthday Party

These ideas are specifically for farm theme birthday parties! Personalize the party with the birthday kiddo’s age, name, and more!

    Mini Party Hats for Animals

    Farm Theme Party

You probably noticed these cute little fellers in one of the photos above. I borrowed some of my daughter’s plastic farm animals, then adorned each with a mini party hat made from a cupcake liner. See how to make the hats here! I scattered these all around the party on the eating tables, food tables, etc. If you don’t have any farm animals on hand, you could use these.

    Farm Birthday Party Banner

    Farm Theme Party Ideas

Create a birthday banner that reflects your farm theme by simply attaching letters to pieces of burlap using clothespins. Add more color to the banner by tying strips of colorful, patterned fabric to the ends.

    Farm Birthday Art

    Farm Themed Birthday Party

Another simple farm party decoration I made were these pieces of art which I scattered all around the party. To make the one above with the farm animals, I used this stencil and just painted it on a small canvas, then just added the party themed stickers after the paint was dry.

    Farm Birthday Party

I made this horseshoe art decoration for the party using this stencil. I personalized it a little more by adding “six” using stickers to the bottom of the horseshoe.

The great thing about these party decorations is that after the party we hung them up in the kiddo’s room – nice little mementos to have!

    Animal Cutouts

    Farm Birthday Party Ideas

To add some decorative height as needed around the party, I made these animal cutouts. First, I bought these animal silhouettes, then loaded them into my Silhouette cutting machine and cut them out on colorful pieces of card stock. I glued them onto small wood dowels, then added touches of glitter here and there. Personalize these with your child’s age and initials. Stick them in bottles or vases as desired – we opted for old Coca Cola glass bottles. We also hung onto these as little decor pieces after the party.

Custom T-Shirt for the Birthday Boy or Girl

For the birthday party, the Circus wore a cute little shirt a friend of ours made that said “Farm Fresh.”

    Don’t forget the party favors!

    Farm Birthday Party Favors

Don’t just give them any ol’ party favor – give them a farm birthday party favor that they’ll enjoy for longer than just one day! We gave each of our party guests a packet of seeds and a small planting pot.

  • Free Printable Cow Art

    Free Printable Cow Art

Use this free printable cow art to bring a touch of chic country charm to your home. There are five different cow prints – each in color and black and white – that you can choose from. The best part? They are all free for you to use – personal use only though!

We call my uncle the cow whisperer.

He can walk into a barn lot, and even without a bucket of feed, after a minute or two, he can often walk right up to a cow without it running away.

He’s been practicing his whole life, so this should be no surprise.

The rest of us though, well we have to tiptoe in and hide behind fence posts to keep them from running off – unless we have a few buckets of feed. In that case, they’ll come up pretty quickly.

Needless to say, it took a good hour, quite a few awkward positions, stepping in cow shit a time or two, and a good zoom lens to get good photos of some of the cows to use as wall art.

The buckets of feed didn’t last as long as I needed them to.

    Cow Art - Free Printables

    But I succeeded.

They did spot me, but when they did, I went still and quiet as I’d learned from the cow whisperer himself.

Cow Print - Free Printable Art Prints

The key, I believe, is to talk softly and make no sudden moves. It’s almost like your romancing a damn cow.

Be warned though, there are no perfumed candles to set the mood.

    Cow Wall Art

I managed to get five pretty good shots of the cows. I’ve turned them into printable wall art that I’ll be using myself and also sharing with you if you’d like. You can print off each image in either color or black and white and decorate with them however you wish – just remember they are for personal use only, no reselling.

How to Get the Free Cow Prints

You can get all five of the cow art prints in both color and black and white by subscribing to the Rain on a Tin Roof email subscription (it’s free and no more than 2-3 emails a week, usually just when I publish new posts). Just sign up below to get access to download the cow printables. Once you’ve subscribed and confirmed your subscription, you’ll be able to download the art. When you sign up, you’ll also be able to access and download all my other free printables in my printable library.

If you’re already a Rain on a Tin Roof subscriber, you can find a link to download the printable cow art in my Printable Library. You can look at the bottom of the last email you received from me for the password. Additionally, you should also be able to put your email address in the box above and it should automatically take you to the download page. It won’t sign you up twice for my emails though.

Tips for Printing the Cow Wall Art

Again, these are for personal use only. Print as many as you wish to for yourself, but don’t print and resell.

    • Print on card stock or photo paper. Some photo paper has a more glossy sheen though, so keep that in mind as to whether you want that look or not.
    • If you’ve got a good color printer at home, then of course you can print them at home. I don’t, so I typically print out my things like this at Staples or another printing center like that.
    • If you’re going the photo paper printing route, then I typically use Mpix for printing. Their color quality is really good. You can also opt for a matte finish there as well.
    • Each image is centered with white space around it on an 8.5″ x 11″ size sheet of paper. I do this so that you can print on card stock or 8″ x 10″ photo paper and it still work without cropping the image too much. If you do print on 8″ x 10″ photo paper or another smaller size of photo paper, just be sure to look and see how the image is being cropped and adjust as needed before printing.

I hope you enjoy this printable cow art – here’s to romancing the cows! 😉

  • Farm Birthday Invitations using Picmonkey

    Farm Birthday Invitations using Picmonkey

Every year, I make a customized birthday party invitation for the Circus’ party. This year, it’s a farm themed birthday, so I made farm birthday invitations. It’s actually pretty easy to make your own invitations and on top of that, it’s much more affordable than buying customized ones via other sources. Use this guide to make your own farm invitations or as a guide to whip up your own different themed party invitations.

Another birthday in the books for the Circus! I can’t believe it, but she is already six!

This year, she wanted a farm themed birthday party. As I always do, I made the invitations for her birthday myself using Picmonkey. It took me about an hour or a little less to put this one together and order the actual printed invitations. The best thing about making your own invitations though is that they can be 100% customized to fit the party and the birthday kiddo. Bonus – it’s much more affordable to make and print out your own invitations instead of going with another design and print service somewhere else online.

Here’s the farm birthday party invitations we ended up with this year for the Circus’s celebration…

Farm Birthday Invitations Tutorial - fully customizable - Rain on a Tin Roof

Isn’t it adorable? Here’s how we did it…

    Farm Invitations Tutorial

This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

The video below will completely walk you through the steps of making your own birthday invitations using Picmonkey and even printing them out. Like I said, you will be able to completely customize this invitation to your own liking. You can change the fonts, colors, anything like that. In the video, I do show you exactly how I did mine, but you can change it up however you like.

Before you start to create your own invitation, there are a couple of things you need:

    1. Farm Animal Images

To create farm animal birthday invitations, you have to have some cute farm animal graphics, of course! The one thing Picmonkey does not have are any farm animal images. They have just about every other kind of graphic you could need, but no farm animals. (Come on, Picmonkey – get on it!) So, you will need to have those on hand before you start. I purchased this pack of farm animal silhouettes from Creative Market to use. It was $5 for 42 farm related images and it was a steal. Not only did I use these for the invitations, but I also used them for decorations at the party as well.

    2. Photo of the Birthday Kid (Optional)

I always like to put a photo of the Circus on her birthday invitations. I keep one every year and that way, you can always look back and see how much they changed from year to year. If you don’t want to include a photo on your invitation, then you can just replace the photo with another farm themed image or something else to your liking. I’ll show you how to crop the photo into a circle in the video.

Ready to get started on your own farm party invitations? Watch the video below! I’m also including written directions as well below the video, but the video will give you the best visual. First, go to Picmonkey!

[adthrive-in-post-video-player video-id=”isvGrWP0″ upload-date=”2018-05-22T13:12:10.000Z” name=”How to Make Farm Birthday Party Invitations using Picmonkey” description=”Make these farm birthday invitations for free using Picmonkey. You can make them completely customized to fit your birthday party’s details and even add a photo of the birthday kiddo! You can make your own invitations in under an hour with this tutorial – all you need to do is print them! “]

Here’s what I did step-by-step. As you do this, be sure to leave plenty of blank space around the edges of your invitation. This will ensure that when you go to print the invitations that none of your text or images will get cut off.

    Barnyard Invitations: Step by Step

    Steps

    Step 1

Create the circle image of the birthday guy or gal.

Go to Picmonkey. Select Edit > Computer > Select the Photo of the birthday kid you want to use.

Go to the square on the left that says Frames > Shape Cutouts > Circle.

Size and move the circle until you have the photo cropped as you like it. Export the image and save it to your desktop.

    Step 2

Go to the Picmonkey homepage. Select Design > Blank Canvas > Print Size, 5×7. Scroll toward the bottom and select the vertical blank one.

    Step 3

Select Canvas Color on the left side. Choose the color you want your background to be. We used a green color, which was 4adc7c. You can simply type that into the letter box under Canvas Color if that’s the same one you wish to use.

    Step 4

Click on the Butterfly icon on the left, which is the Overlays menu. Click Add Your Own. Find and choose the barn images or whatever other image you wish to use and put one in each of the upper corners of the invitation.

Repeat this process and add in the animals on top of one another in the lower left hand corner as well.

Use the Overlay box that pops up with each image to turn the images white or whatever other color you want to use.

    Step 5

Click on the Tt on the left. Add in a text box using the font Black Jack. Type in “Let’s Celebrate!” Make it white or another color you want to use. Click on the Effects button on the text menu box that pops up and select curve. This will curve the text. Place this text box near the top of the invitation.

    Step 6

Click on the Butterfly icon > Add Your Own. Select the photo you cropped into a circle. Size and place it just under “Let’s Celebrate!”

    Step 7

Add in the rest of the text.

Click on the Tt button again and add in the rest of the details for your party. Below is a detailed image noting each text font and colors.

Sorry about the typos in the invitation near the bottom – you get the idea though!

Farm Invitations - Fonts and colors - Rain on a Tin Roof

    Step 8

Add in the rest of your images.

Go back to the Butterfly icon > Add Your Own. Add in the cows on either side of the photo. Add the pitchforks beside the date and address.

Go to the Apple icon on the left. Select Celebrate. This is where you can add the balloon and party hats. To add the gift and bow, select Santaland from the Apple icon. You’ll find those under that theme. Below is another image with all the details on the images I used.

Barnyard Invitations - graphics and overlays to use - Rain on a Tin Roof

    Step 9

After you’ve got your invitations exactly how you like them, click Export along the top and save it to your computer. You can also click the Save icon along the top and that will save it to your Picmonkey hub, which will allow you to come back in and edit the invitation if needed. I generally like to do both of those options in case I do need to come back in and edit the invitation for some reason.

    Step 10

    Print your invitations!

You can also print your invitations right from Picmonkey. Once you’ve exported and saved your party invitation to your desktop, go to the Picmonkey homepage. Scroll down to the bottom and click on Picmonkey Print under Apps + Tools.

Select Flat Cards > Get Started > 5×7 > Single Sided > Whichever paper type you prefer > How Many Invitations You Need > Upload Your Invitation. Make sure everything looks good and that nothing is cut off on the edges, then finish your order!

  • The Farm: Traditional Casual Master Bedroom Design

The Farm: Traditional Casual Master Bedroom Design

I’m going to be real honest.

I didn’t expect to be this excited about how the master bedroom is shaping up at the farm. When it comes to design, I’m usually not traditional at all. I mean, have you seen the 70’s Landing Pad? But with the farm house, I felt going more traditional, but casual was the best route to go.

In my completely unprofessional opinion, there’s really something to be said about listening to the house and working with it instead of against it, ya’ll.

I love how this bedroom is looking you guys. There’s just paint on the walls and a new light up, but it’s already making me smile.

Before I jump into the design plan, here’s what the room started out looking like:

And the plan for the bedroom is….Traditional Casual.

*Affiliate links may be included in this post. I have also partnered with Minted on the art for this space, Bellacor on the lighting and Mohawk on the rug. I keep it real though – all opinions are 100% mine.

    Traditional Casual Bedroom

This traditional casual bedroom design brings in timeless elements that won't easily date, but also packs a punch of personality and color too.

Headboard / Solid Navy Pillows / Dragon Pillows / Chandelier / Rug / Morning Mist Wall Art / Ivory Curtain Panels / Mirror / Lamp / Dresser

Let’s break it down, shall we?

*Lots of you have asked for a tutorial on how to do design boards like the one above. That tutorial is coming next week, guys and gals, so stay tuned! They are easy!

    The Wall Color

Traditional Casual Master Bedroom Design - a timeless design that also includes color and personality.

It’s called Newbury Port Blue by Benjamin Moore, however I had it color-matched at Home Depot and mixed in Behr Marquee paint. It’s already on the walls over at the farm and it. is. gorgeous. In fact, I loved it so much that I’m also painting the dining room that same color. The gold medal goes to Grunt Labor for picking out this color – that’s right, he picked it.

The design and decorating of this house is on a pretty tight budget, y’all. Luckily, my job allows me to partner with some awesome brands on a few things here and there, but there’s still a ton of things we need for the house that I can’t just go out and buy – because money! So, we are putting a lot of things into action that we had stored from our previous home and using quite a few hand-me-down pieces as well. The headboard from our previous master bedroom is one of those pieces.

    The Bed

Traditional Casual Master Bedroom Design - a timeless design that also includes color and personality.

Headboard / Solid Navy Pillows / Dragon Pillows

This isn’t the same exact headboard we have, but it’s a damn close match. I am so glad we didn’t get rid of it. I think it’s going to look great in the master at the farm. I haven’t decided on actual bedding yet, but it will probably be mostly white with a few accent pillows. I love how the navy pillows bring in the wall color to the bed and the dragon pillows add pattern, interest and a bit more color to the space.

    The Chandelier

Traditional Casual Master Bedroom Design - a timeless design that also includes color and personality.

    Minka-Lavery Tibury Polished Nickel Chandelier

This baby is quite the showstopper in the space. The polished nickel finish just pops off those navy walls. As you well know, I’m usually a brass finish kind of girl and it’s still #1 in my book, but Grunt Labor does not share the same love of brass. At all.  We compromised on a polished nickel finish for the space. I think it’s a timeless look that won’t easily date at all. More details on this fixture are here and they also have multiple other fixtures in this collection here.

    The Rug

Traditional Casual Master Bedroom Design - a timeless design that also includes color and personality.

Mohawk Home Studio Perfection Sea Rug

With the walls being dark, I wanted to have lighter shades on the floor. The floor itself is a light stained hardwood, which is good. The brown edge on this rug from Mohawk will contrast nicely with that and the lighter blue complements it well. We’ll also be putting a rug pad down under the rug to make it a bit more cushy and cozy, but it will also serve to protect the hardwoods and extend the life of the rug.

    The Art

Traditional Casual Master Bedroom Design - a timeless design that also includes color and personality.

    Morning Mist Wall Art

I wanted the art to be lighter than the walls and also bring in some green from the pillows. This piece called Morning Mist from Minted did just that. You can customize the size and frame with art from Minted, so I also opted for a silver frame to coordinate with the the chandelier.

    Window Treatments

Traditional Casual Master Bedroom Design - a timeless design that also includes color and personality.

    Ivory Curtain Panels

With such dark walls, I wanted to lighten up the room a little with the curtain panels. I also wanted to keep it simple, so we are planning to just go with basic ivory curtain panels.

    Dresser, Mirror & Lamp

Traditional Casual Master Bedroom Design - a timeless design that also includes color and personality.

    Mirror / Lamp / Dresser

We were going to use a spare hand-me-down dresser we had on hand as the TV stand in the living room, but as it turns out, we were able to get a media center for it, so the dresser, much like the one pictured above, is destined for the master bedroom. I want to bring a little more silver to this space, so I’m hoping to get that mirror or a similar one. And finally, I want to bring in a little more cream with a lamp on the dresser.

The master bedroom design might be traditional, but I think it still packs some color and personality.

    What do you think?

*This post is sponsored by DISH, however all opinions are 100% mine. Affiliate links may also be contained in this post.

So I warned you that the design of my grandparent’s house that we’ll be living in part-time was going to be very different than what our 70’s Landing Pad looks like. I wasn’t kidding. Are you ready for the first design plans? Let’s start with the living room…

    Before

First off, the wood trim isn’t going anywhere. It does need some cleaning up where paint was splattered on it over the years, but we are keeping it as-is otherwise. I think my Pap would strike me dead from the grave if I painted over it. 😉 He loved a beautiful piece of stained wood.

This is a longer room than it is wide, so there might be some furniture re-positioning going on once we get it all in there, but for the most part, here’s where we’re going with this space.

    The Plan

The Farm: Living Room Design Plan

    Drapes / Sofa / Chairs / Ottoman / Rug

We’re calling it Traditional Casual. Growing up, the living room at my grandparent’s home was always the more formal room, but it was always warm and welcoming too – it’s where we always arranged ourselves to open gifts at Christmas. I wanted to stay true to that, while also making it work for us.

The walls are going to get a fresh coat of a light beige paint (Beige! Can you believe it?!), but we’re going to add some more traditional colors into the space with the drapes, rug and leather sofa. We’ll also throw in some accent pillows as well.

Wall Color / Dresser / Sconce / Rug

On the wall opposite the sofa, is where the television will reside. Growing up, the den always held the TV and never the living room, but the den is small and I decided it would be better used for us as an office of sorts. In my head, the den is going to be a library as well where I’ll write a book, while looking out the window but we all know how that will probably work out. 😉

We have a hand-me-down dresser very much like the one above, that will hold the television. I’m considering putting sconces on either side of the TV like we did in the living room at our Beloved Foreclosure.

One of the issues we’ve had to figure out about this whole part-time country living was the TV service. In the beginning, I thought maybe we would be able to get by without cable since we would be there just part of the time. And then Grunt reminded me about football season. Duh. TV is a must. In my hometown, there is one cable TV provider in the area and well, they don’t offer all the channels we would like or even a price we would like either. We looked at alternatives and eventually settled on DISH.

Besides having all the premium channels, sports channels and Netflix integrated right into their services at a good price, DISH also has amazing customer service. Seriously, the installer showed up to install our dish, which is free by the way, and I didn’t even have our television out of the box or set-up. He must have realized how much I had on my plate by the looks of my paint covered overalls, no makeup, crazy hair and crazy talk, so bless his heart, he took all of it out, set it all up and then neatly arranged all the instruction manuals and other paperwork that had came with the TV.

We were also able to take advantage of a promotion that DISH is currently offering – a free Polk soundbar – I’ll let you guess about how excited Grunt was at the thought of turning up that soundbar during football games – just like you’re in the stadium, baby. 😉 Besides the free soundbar, if you’re a new DISH customer, you can also take advantage of their free TV mounting or a set of bluetooth headphones, but only thru July 30th! Use the following offer codes during checkout to make sure you get yours: Polk Soundbar – DISHSOUND967, TV Mount – MOUNT4753 or Bluetooth Headphones BTOFFER852.

DISH also offers a 2 Year Price Guarantee, which is a huge deal for us. We’ve went round and round with cable companies in the past because their rates skyrocket after the first six months, a year or really whenever they decide to change their mind, but DISH isn’t like that. We can budget for that cost for at least two years without it changing. You can find more information about getting DISH at your house by visiting their site or calling 877-625-0157.

So while we are currently rocking a somewhat redneck TV setup in the living room, we’ve got premium TV service. Little blonde hair girls with curls and overall-wearin’ uncles not included with DISH offers. 😉
