Question: I like your vintage nursery rhyme idea in framing them. Did you just buy a nursery rhyme book with vintage pictures & cut them out and framed them or copied them from a site & printed them out? I want to make these for my granddaughter’s room. Love the idea..so cute!

Yep, Valerie, that’s exactly what I did. I scoured thrift stores and antique stores for cheap vintage nursery rhyme books and then just cut them out and framed them!

Hi Julie! We actually bought the hardwood floors in that dark shade – I’m not sure what the color is. I do know that Minwax has a couple of really great dark stains – Ebony, Jacobean and Espresso. Hope that helps!

Hi, We live in a very old wooden farm house – the original living-room floor is made up of rough 5″ planks. Have you any suggestions as how to oil this floor or methods of finishing such a floor? We have area rugs over it now. Also, the planks are not sandable due to too many old floor nails.
    Thanks.

Hi Delilah! Oh, this is tough one. Unfortunately, I’m not much help here. I used to live in an old farm house too, but we had hardwood floors in there that were able to be refinished. I’m sorry!

Hi, I have sent my email twice now and nothing has come back to verify. I feel so rejected! I love your information. I read how do paint laminated counter tops, followed all the directions(little paranoid so made sure I did everything correctly) and they came out beautiful. Except, each time I put another coat of poly on it another part will peel or if I use my nail I can scratch off paint. I am up to two coats but have to keep going back to fix the peeling. Any ideas how I fix or how I stop this from happening? And any idea why my accepting email is not coming back to me?

Hi Barbara – I’m so sorry the email was giving you trouble. I haven’t heard of this issue before. How many coats of the black chalkboard paint did you give the counter? Did you remove the old laminate top and if so, were any of the spots shiny or slick when you removed it? How long are you waiting between coats of poly?

As far as the email, do you mean that you are trying to subscribe to the new post emails? If that is it, I should be able to confirm your subscription manually on my end.

So happy to have you around here, Kari! The finish of the black paint is satin. That is the sheen I paint almost every wall in my house. I use semi-gloss on trim! Enjoy your new home! So exciting!

I have a question about the NuCore flooring. My husband and I are thinking about putting it in our living room. I am wondering if our heavy furniture will wear dents into the flooring. I’ve seen other laminate after a few years with furniture marks. The salesman at Floor and Devor told us it was made from PVC material and it sounds sturdy but I thought the would ask you.

Hi Gloria. You could probably take off one of the doors or drawers and take it to Home Depot or Lowe’s and have them color match it.

I love your article on the NuCore flooring. I am having to replace my carpet in the front hall and 2 bedrooms due to my hot water heater rusting through. (It’s in the attic – something they like to do here in Houston!) I decided to look at Floor & Decor for replacement ideas and stumbled on to the NuCore. It’s been a year since you installed yours – have you seen any downsides to it?

Love your website – such great ideas! Keep up the great posting!

You really have it made, being able to stay in your house and remodel your new house! I live in a bi-level built in 1970 and the front door is never used–get that!?!?!? We only use the back door and it has a hall way so it is very disturbing as an entryway. We have four little bedrooms up so be glad you have what you do! Can’t shut the door to the half-bath because I’m claustrophobic! But, all in all I like our home. You learn to like what you have, and change what you can…

I just stripped 2 end tables and a coffe table and much to my surprise I found that most of it is constructed using poured and molded resin. I’m planning to use a good bonding primer but I’m not sure what type of paint to follow with. I will also be using a graining tool followed I think by a darker wax to give it a more real wood look. Any suggestions on the best paint to use? Thanks for any help you can send my way!……Sherry

Hi Sherry! If you use a good bonding primer, I would think you would be able to use a regular latex paint. Ask the paint guy at your local hardware store to confirm!

We are planning to use NuCore on our plywood cabin floor in northern Wisconsin. The cabin is not heated when we are gone in the winter. Will it hold up? We were told at Mennards to put a quarter inch gap at the edges to allow for expansion and to start the room from the left. Any more advice you can give us would be greatly appreciated. We may have to install ourselves as our contractor is so busy.

Hi Karlie. My in-laws were actually considering putting NuCore down in their sunroom that they just added on, which is unheated and uncooled. They visited Floor and Decor and were told that the warranty is voided if the flooring is put in places where the temperature is not maintained. They said they thought it would probably hold up, but couldn’t guarantee it. I hope that helps.

Hi! I don’t normally subscribe to online blogs, in fact, this is the first, but your post on popcorn ceilings was just too good that I had to subscribe. I moved house 2 days ago and I’m using the neighbours wifi to get online. IT only works at the back of the garden so I’m testing my stamina (and ability not to freeze) in order to find your website and read more posts. I found you on Pinterest, and just wanted to say thank you for helping me out, because popcorn ceiling is really quite awful, and I can’t wait to get rid of it. Hopefully I’ll remember to put something down for floor coverage beforehand!

    Hi there,

I despererslt need help. I’m trying to pretty up an unfinished memory box for a wedding present for some dear friends of mine. I was hoping to stain it and then paint a silver stag head on top of the stain. I have no idea which paints and stains are the best to use….or what equipment I would need. I don’t want to mess this up. Please help. I would be eternally grateful!!

Hi Charlene! For the stain, I would recommend Minwax. That’s the brand I’ve always used and it’s never failed me. You shouldn’t need much at all and most home improvement stores have small cans of it available in their paint department. For the silver stag head, I would go with a craft acrylic paint, which you can buy at any craft store such as Hobby Lobby or Michael’s. Hope that helps!
